Back story first. My next door neighbors tend to shoot stray cats that keep showing up on their property. They do that to keep their cats safe since they never take their cats to the vet for vaccinations, and the cats tend to fight. Well for the past week or two they've been seeing a grey cat wearing a collar lurking around. They've fired a couple shots over it's head to try and scare it away, but they still spot it every now and then, and claim that they can't get close to it.
Tonight, around dusk, I went to take my birdseed bell down since somethings been running off with them (deer maybe?), when I was out there I spotted a grey lump, I thought it was a rabbit at first but then I got a better look and saw that it was the cat, so me being me I called to it and it meowed back then came trotting up to me. Oooo.Kkkk., it's obviously not a feral, and it's extremely friendly. Well I stated walking back to my door and it followed me held the door open and after a couple of false starts it came on inside. Uhhohhhh......
It's a boy, he's in really good body condition but was extremely hungry. I figured that one out when I went to put some water out for him and he came trotting up all excited then looked disappointed when it was only water. Luckily I had some of Shadow's Merrick pork food left. Hopefully it's high enough protein content for him since he's eaten a good cup of it. If I remember right it's like 70% protein. He's still eating but he stops and comes over to me for pets before going back to it.
He will not go back outside, he'll follow me to the door and look out when I open it, rub up against the frame, then stand there meowing at me. I suppose I could throw him out but I don't have the heart to. What am I supposed to do with him?
I did call the neighbor and let them know about him, and I will go knock on doors tomorrow to see if anyone near me owns him, but my neighbor flat out said she/they will not make a special trip to town to bring him to the shelter. As sweet as he is, as over crowded as that shelter is, and as small as the cubby holes they keep the cats in are, I'm dreading taking him there

I'll take him to the vet first and have them scan him for a chip. I really, really, really, hope that he has an owner somewhere. I was serious when I said I really cannot afford another animal right now but how could I leave him at the shelter?
