Ticks - HELP!

Hello! I've not posted much but figured this was the place to ask for help.

I have two dogs: Daisy - 5 year old yorkie/chihuahua mix and Dexter: 4 month old yorkie

Both are on Trifexis.

However, I've recently discovered TWO ticks on Dexter. I've never had ANY on Daisy before. I also just realized Trifexis doesn't protect against ticks so I guess we've just been lucky with Daisy.

My question is - what can be added to the monthly Trifexis to protect against any diseases ticks may carry? I have small kids so I really don't like topical medications. The kids touch the dogs no matter what and the dogs aren't used to being confined while we are home so I'd hate to try and keep them separated for a day until I could bathe them.

Any advice is apperciated! :)

The only vaccine that I know of that protects against tick diseases is the lepto vaccine.

Hopefully someone else will chime in with advice on a tick preventative for your dogs, the ones that I'm familiar with are all topicals. There are also tick collars that you can put on but if you use that your kids will be even more exposed to the chemicals.

Watch where you let the dogs go and see if you can pin point where he might have gotten the tick. Ticks like to live in high grass, tall plants, and bushes, so keeping your dog out of those will help lessen the chance of him getting a tick.

You can get a flea/tick collar. The Seresto brand has gotten good reviews and I've used the Preventic collars in the past.
@Rain, did you mean a vaccine for Lyme disease? I don't think the various strains of lepto are carried by ticks. I could be wrong. :)

Thanks for correcting me:), I was getting the illnesses mixed up and for some reason thinking lepto was carried by ticks.

I think rats are one of several species that can harbor the various strains of lepto. Around here we've had an increase in cases and some are attributing it to foxes. Skunks and raccoons also are carriers of the bacteria. We're gotten off topic. :) Sorry.

I would definitely be careful in regards to lymes.
On a horse forum I frequent, it took a horse's owner some years before a confirmed diagnosis of Lymes came about, as the symptoms were similar to other problems. Now the poor thing has permanent damage.

I would just stop using the Trifexis and switch to frontline plus topical. I lived in Mexico where ticks are really heavy. The frontline worked great. It has to be applied every 30 days to keep the ticks off.
