One of my dogs (5yr old mini fox terrier) has given me a lot of grief the past few years with her house training. She is toilet trained and knows to go potty outside. She is outside more than she is inside, and I always praise for toileting outside if I see her do it, even now.
Since we got my other dog nearly three years ago, she has started pooping inside again. Not in random spots, the same spot every time, which is where they normally toilet if I'm a bad human and don't let them out when they tell me they need to go. She can hold overnight just fine, and when I go away on trips with my other dog she goes back to being perfectly toilet trained, no accidents whatsoever. Sometimes we have good stints where for a couple days there are no accidents, but its rare.
She gets along great with my other girl and always has, even from the beginning she was in love with Gem. Sometimes she takes her frustration out on Gem when she gets nervous and will run at her (just a bit of snarling) but Gem just stands still and ignores it. They sleep together by choice and Maisie is definitely the boss when it comes to that pair.
I was thinking it could be a nervous thing, given she does have some anxiety we are working through. Or perhaps territorial given she was here first and maybe feels the need to make that known. I never scold her of course, but I have tried different sprays such as white vinegar, clove oil, citronella etc on that area to discourage, which all worked when toilet training as puppies but haven't worked for me since. The longest she is expected to hold for is from 10:00pm to 6:00am, which she has never minded before we got my other dog. My other dog does not toilet inside and we hose out the area with dishwashing soap whenever it is soiled.
I was thinking perhaps revert back to crate training? How do I address this?
