Ugh! Why me??

Back story first. My next door neighbors tend to shoot stray cats that keep showing up on their property. They do that to keep their cats safe since they never take their cats to the vet for vaccinations, and the cats tend to fight. Well for the past week or two they've been seeing a grey cat wearing a collar lurking around. They've fired a couple shots over it's head to try and scare it away, but they still spot it every now and then, and claim that they can't get close to it.

Tonight, around dusk, I went to take my birdseed bell down since somethings been running off with them (deer maybe?), when I was out there I spotted a grey lump, I thought it was a rabbit at first but then I got a better look and saw that it was the cat, so me being me I called to it and it meowed back then came trotting up to me. Oooo.Kkkk., it's obviously not a feral, and it's extremely friendly. Well I stated walking back to my door and it followed me held the door open and after a couple of false starts it came on inside. Uhhohhhh......

It's a boy, he's in really good body condition but was extremely hungry. I figured that one out when I went to put some water out for him and he came trotting up all excited then looked disappointed when it was only water. Luckily I had some of Shadow's Merrick pork food left. Hopefully it's high enough protein content for him since he's eaten a good cup of it. If I remember right it's like 70% protein. He's still eating but he stops and comes over to me for pets before going back to it.

He will not go back outside, he'll follow me to the door and look out when I open it, rub up against the frame, then stand there meowing at me. I suppose I could throw him out but I don't have the heart to. What am I supposed to do with him?

I did call the neighbor and let them know about him, and I will go knock on doors tomorrow to see if anyone near me owns him, but my neighbor flat out said she/they will not make a special trip to town to bring him to the shelter. As sweet as he is, as over crowded as that shelter is, and as small as the cubby holes they keep the cats in are, I'm dreading taking him there:(:(:( I'll take him to the vet first and have them scan him for a chip. I really, really, really, hope that he has an owner somewhere. I was serious when I said I really cannot afford another animal right now but how could I leave him at the shelter?

Yep, all the cats are fixed. He's just really territorial.

Ruth, I'd be afraid to do that unless I was right out there with him since we get loose dogs around here every now and then. If I was going to do something it'd have to be some sort of kennel set up and then I'd be afraid some dog would come by and torment him.

Update:

Nothing much has changed. I still have Cat, still want to re-home him, still need to get him to the vet to be checked for a chip and to be health checked if he doesn't have one before I can re-home him.

I was supposed to take him to the vet Wed, but it doesn't look like that will happen, neighbor is worried about the gov. shut down affecting his veteran benefits and wife's SS benefits and the trip to town putting more miles on the vehicle which will cause it to need an oil change sooner so he's no longer wanting to make a special trip to town. I'll gladly pay for gas but no way can I also afford to pay for an oil change. Sooooo it's back to the waiting game.

Honestly I don't know how much longer I can take trying to keep him separate from Rusty. Rusty insist on coming over here, after all a strange cat is in his territory, and starting today Cat now runs from me in order to go wander over there. He wasn't very happy with me today for keeping him from going after Rusty. I don't know how trying to keep him in would go, I'm afraid he'd destroy the door not to mention he door darts, I may be finding out though. Hopefully tomorrow will be better.

I bought him better cat litter, I made the mistake of getting Cat's Pride clumpable. Cat's Pride lies, it should have been Cat's Pride clumps then falls apart. Also picked up the best food I could find there, unfortunately it's not that great but still better then the trash I mistakenly bought before.

Ugh if only I had a car and drove this would have all been taken care of last week!

Thanks for the idea!

I hadn't but will look into it. I know there's large animal vets around here that make farm calls, but don't know if there's any that will do small animals. It also doesn't help that I'm like 40 miles from the nearest town of any good size.

Right now he's curled up next to me using my leg as a pillow, if only it could be this way during the day LOL.

Oh one strange thing he does is lets out a little hiss for no reason that I can see. There's no volume behind it, it's a really low sound. Nothing will by him, nothing will be touching him, he won't be acting in pain, he won't not staring at anything, he's done it both inside and outside, and he won't be acting scared or upset either before or afterwards. I can't figure out why he's doing that, and have never been around a cat that does that:ponder:

Thanks!

I'm in Deep East Texas, so if you could help that'd be great:thumbsup:

Me and cat had a pretty good morning. I took him out and we were on the deck, of course he eventually decided to go explore, and then decided to go toward Rusty's house so I was following him and got to wondering. Instead of going toward him I started walking toward the meadow while keeping an eye on him, he started following along behind me so we went hiking toward down to the creek and stayed down there for awhile before coming home. Looks like Mr. Cat just has a need to explore and gets bored easily.:D Still doesn't solve the territorial problem but maybe keeping him busy will help to avoid it happening.

I still have him, I was supposed to take him to the vet today but had to cancel since the neighbors decided that they weren't going to go to town after all. So I'm back to the waiting game.

We had a relaxing day, it's been raining most of the day and wet all of the day it's also gotten really cool so we stayed inside most of the day. Cat has decided not to answer to Cat, but will answer to Kit Kat. He followed me down to the creek where he decided to act like a wild man running all around, jumping up on fallen trees, and climbing a few trees, he then followed me back home like he hadn't just acted like a lunatic. He's not a cure for a broken heart, but he sure is a distraction from one.

Anyway here's some pics of him from before our trip to the creek.

OHHH sorry! I forgot I had two threads going on him! I updated the other thread and forgot to do this one.

I finally got a ride to the vet this past Wednesday and when they scanned him they found a chip. His name is Hansel and apparently there was also a female cat named Gretel. His original owner had rehomed them and told their new person to keep them inside for a least a few days before letting them out and to change the contact info on the chips. Well new person let them out the next day and they both disappeared. Dunno how long ago that was, but my neighbor had been spotting Hansel for at least a month before I finally saw him and rescued him. Original owner wanted him back and was going to pick him up at the vet. Since my appt was at 9am and she wasn't coming till around 1pm I couldn't stay to see the reunion but I would have given a lot to be able to do so.

Happy ending for original owner and Hansel, but I miss him like crazy and think I was hoping that I'd be able to keep him someway, somehow. Dunno how though considering him and Rusty wanted to fight. He's a great little cat and I hope the owner keeps him, she did a really good job raising him.

Yeah, it was weird, the tech came in and said he was chipped, and I said, "Oh great!" and was really happy. Then when I was leaving the vet without him I was really upset, and near tears, thinking, "Nooo I don't want to leave him!"

Since, unless some miracle happened and him and Rusty started getting along, I know good and well I couldn't keep him, I'm glad that his original owner wanted him. Besides if I kept him I'd be in big trouble if he got sick and needed more then just shots and a check up.

Oh well, I'd do it again in a heartbeat. No way can I turn away a critter needing help.
