So my dog has recently become very toy aggressive around other dogs. With me she’s fine, she brings me toys to play tug of war or keep away, or fetch, etc. I can easily grab a toy from her, she knows “let go” and “leave it” (still working in drop it). My neighborhood has this big “dog play area) it’s just a large patch of gras almost like a yard. And one of my neighbors has two dogs my dog gets along with fine most of the time. My dog is a 55lb bully mix, and the other two dogs are mutts, ones 70lbs the other about 40. And lately I’ve been seeing a lot of concerning behavior from her regarding toys. Be it a ball, a rope toy, or a squeaky toy. She will play with it, and even hold it right up to other dogs faces to try and get them to chase her and try and take it. But the minute they do, or if they come up to her with the toy, she growls and snaps. With my neighbors dogs they tend to back off, at most the growl back and then reset and go back to playing. But I worry she’ll do this one day to a dog who won’t and end up in a fight. I live alone, and she’s my only dog. So I can’t exactly train it out at home. I’d like to eventually get a second dog when I move into a home, but am concerned that this toy aggression will be an issue. Does anyone have any tips for training this out? I just can’t think of an effective way to train it out since it’s not an every day occurrence. It’s just with other dogs. And like I said she has no dog aggression, she’s always up and willing to play with them. Even taunting them with the toy to be chased. Ive taken to just not bringing toys with me to the grassy area, but that’s not a solution. Especially because sticks and other items can be seen as toys as well. Or sometimes people leave toys out there.
