Teething

Okay...so I honestly have dealt with more puppy teething than kitty teething....Bon Bon is ~4 months old and one of her canines is showing through. She has a medical condition which causes her to be one odd ball kitten. Her appetite was going great then suddenly she isn't all that interested again and when I was giving her some meds I noticed her canine tooth coming in. Just wanted to know if just like puppies, teething for kittens can cause lots of pain. She was interested in food but then walked away wanting to play.

Also, when a puppy teeths you give ice or cold things, how do you deal with a kittens pain?

wish i could suggest something... i don't know that cats are very likely to chew the same things as dogs though! i don't see why you couldn't try out similar remedies though... i mean, just like dogs, all cats are individuals, so yours may take to things that others would not....

When we did TNR in my family in a neighborhood that had an awful feral problem and unspayed females. I'd regularly steal kittens and catch/tame older kittens. None of the kittens ever had teething problems. I know that probably doesn't help you. LOL. What I'm saying is I'm not sure there's a whole lot to be done. :( I never saw any of them acting like they were in pain or not eating enough.

She ate Tuna when I put that down. She is a very fussy eater...wants one thing one day, then something different the next. Like she gets bored with food....definitely doesn't fit the mold in this house haha

hmm... you know what might actually work out for her, i switched fawkes to a completely raw diet... it comes pre-frozen in 1oz chunks... maybe she'd like that? it is a bit pricey, but after the flutd thing, i did a lot of reading and it seemed the best option for him...

yep... fawkes will actually eat it frozen if i put it out for him like that.... rofl... took a while for him to get used to it though... omg!

this is the one that he likes best... will actually scream at me over and over again to feed it to him! after i got him on this one, i was able to switch to the chicken... so far the red meat varieties don't work for him, lead to vomiting... my sister's cat has the same issue with it. a friend of mine gets a different but similar brand from whole foods for his cat, and he eats anything with no problem though...

Pet Club carries it. Got a coupon, going to go get a sample trial :) However, I may just go with the duck or venison to see if she likes it? Hopefully the people there will have some suggestions. Dang picky animals!

i would recommend against the venison... just saying :) but yeah, try it, and if the cats don't eat it, you can feed it to the dogs... i actually just cooked the venison and added it to clover's homemade food, so it wasn't wasted :)

fawkes can never keep it down. i've tried it repeatedly... like i said, he has a hard time with all the red meat options... the girl at the pet store said the duck is the easiest on the digestion, and overall the most palatable... like i said, my friends cat doesn't have an issue with any of the red meat options, but both my cat and my sister's can't keep them down for some reason

btw, it is really easy to chop the chunks in half with a large knife when they are frozen (recently learned this) so, if it is cheaper to get the larger package, you might consider that too... i'm going to look into it when i get my next package...

Just got the duck forumla in big patties and sample size of chicken medallions. Also grabbed a can of rabbit formula to see if she likes the flavor. Wish us luck! Thanks so much for the awesome suggestion too

she loves the duck!!! She also frickin loves the rabbit wet food LOL and cheezits...which we found out just now....what a picky girl.

Fawkese how long did you give the raw with kibble? It says to introduce it just like any other food, problem is shes not eating much of any other food but enough to maintain the weight that she is at

i didn't at all... fawkes wasn't allowed kibble after the flutd... i was feeding him canned food only at the time. personally, i'd say make the switch, but under feed her for a few days in case she starts to get sick, unless she is really underweight, it shouldn't hurt her, if she is, then i personally would switch to a mix of canned and the new stuff, until you are sure... she took to it really fast! lol, you want to talk about picky, fawkes ONLY likes kibble, it took me a year to get him to eat any wet food, and then for a long time it was only friskies! he still tries to get at clover's kibble if he has a chance!

Awesome. TY so much. I was afraid people would give me grief about starting her on raw...but in the end this may be best for her because of her heart :) I will feed small meals multiple times a day and watch her. If nothing else, at least I know she likes the rabbit wet food

i totally understand that... after browsing some cat forums though, it seems the only way to feed a cat... and after all the reading i did when fawkes was sick, i think it is the best option for him... to top it off, it is actually a bit cheaper than feeding canned food, AND his dental health has improved dramatically... i wasn't expecting that, but sure enough, no more bad breath, and his teeth are much cleaner. there is a local butcher shop that sells all natural/organic/free range meats, and they sell a "chub" of turkey that is meant for pet food, so meat, organs etc... i get it sometimes for clover's food, i might start giving some of it to the cat and adding in a calcium supplement, but i have to check out what other minerals it needs to be balanced... anyway, it would be like half the price of this stuff, so i'm thinking about it... lol, so nervous about making the cat's food!!!

I am actually asking about cost of homemade diet vs kibble because if its cheaper or the same id love to switch from kibble! Keep me posted if you find any info on it and ill do the same!

definitely ;) i have a pretty good book on homemade diets:
Amazon.com: Dr. Pitcairn's New Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats (9781579549732): Richard H. Pitcairn, Susan Hubble Pitcairn: Books so i use that as a reference. for the dog it seems easy to balance because i can cook everything... i even make my own calcium supplement... mostly i try to make sure that he gets a good variety of foods... the cat is so picky i'm a bit nervous to try it! i also double check recipes with stuff i find online... i think that i will likely go back and forth with the homemade and store bought raw, until i feel ok with it...

OH there are also the freeze dried diets! fawkes really likes those too! i keep some on hand for when i run out of the other, just soak it in water for a while... it costs more than the same amount of just frozen stuff... i feel like the frozen stuff is probably better, but after it has soaked in water, you might not have guessed it was ever dry!

Well Bon Bon loves the food!!! She's up to 3.4 lbs from 3.08 lbs. she also had her echocardiogram and does not have the heart murmur the original bet thought she had, but she does have one. Ver is not concerned about it and wants a recheck in a year :)
