How much is to much food?

I took in a stray almost 2 weeks ago, he looks like a DSH grey cat with tabby markings, but I suspect that there may be pig in the mix somewhere.

The first night I fed him Merrick pork dog food, that I had left over from when Shadow had passed away exactly 2 weeks before I spotted cat, he dang near ate 2 cups of it and might have ate more if I had put out more. I didn't think much of it since my neighbors had been spotting him wandering around for at least a month or so, I figured maybe he was just really hungry.

The next day I got a ride to the store and picked up some dry friskies cat food, and started out feeding him what was recommended on the bag, then adding a good 1/3 cup extra since he acted like he was starving. I finally checked the ingredients, corn or wheat was the first 3 ingredients. Dang it no wonder h was acting like he was starving!

Next time I was at the store I picked up the best dry food I could find, unfortunately it was Meow Mix, but at least meat was the second ingredient, it'll have to do until I can get to a better store and find a better food to feed until I can get him re-homed. I fed the recommended amount, but again he acts like he's starving so once again I added 1/3 cup more and he still acts hungry.

All the above happened the first week I had him.

I've branched out into canned food, and decided to feed him like I fed Pirate my last cat. I stared with 1 can of Fancy Feast, and around 2/3 cup of the dry food. Did that for 2 days yet he acts like I haven't feed him in 2 days. So yesterday I picked up some Friskies pate canned food, and fed him 1/2 the can in the morning, around 2 tablespoons of dry food around an hour later (he acted like I hadn't feed him in days, 1/3 cup of dry food around noon (again he acted like I hadn't fed him in days) and the other 1/2 of the can of food around 6pm. My thinking was that maybe upping the canned food will help him to feel full and he won't act like he's starving, and I know I'm only on day 1 of doing so but how much is to much food.?

Pirate was a big boy. he weighted about 18 lbs, and bordered on being fat, but I always managed to keep his weight just low enough feeding 1/2 cup of dry food, and 1 can of fancy feast a day. Cat weights around 8 to 10 lbs and wants to eat double what I fed Pirate. At least Cat is very active during the day but still I'm sure if I keep feeding him what I am he's going to be 1 ft tall and 3 ft wide! Should I cut back on his food, keep feeding him what I am, or feed 1 can of Friskies or 2 cans of Fancy Feast, and free feed the dry food and hope that he eventually realizes he's always going to have food and so will start self regulating?

Hopefully I'll get to the vet Tues or Wed. and I'll let the vet know what's going on, so this is just until I can get him checked out medically.

Rain, youare smart to mix the wet with the dry.
I had a cat years ago whose name was Piggy, you can imagine why.
In the beginning, he was fed only dry, and ended up with urinary blockage, and Vet told me because I feeding just dry.
So we went to wet, and mixed in the dry, he loved the dry, so mixing it was his idea of a feast.
He ate this was until he passed at 20, but never had a problem again.

HBM, when I had Pirate I had started him on just dry, but he always seemed constipated so I went with the wet and dry to try and combat that and mixed a little water in with the wet. Since I got Cat I've been doing some reading and from what I've found cats do best on a strictly canned food diet or better yet a raw diet. They're so different from dogs!

It's the sheer amount the little pig wants to eat that has me concerned. I'm hoping it's just psychological and that he's worried about not having food.

So far this morning he's eaten 1/2 a can of Friskies, then I took him out where he ran around like a crazy cat and climbed a few trees before I called it quits and brought him in. I think it turning cold and really windy had something to do with him being so crazy. Once in he begged for food and I fed him 1/3 cup of dry food. He ate it all like I hadn't fed him just an hour before, and is now sleeping on the couch.

Like I said, if this keeps up he'll be 1 ft tall and 3 ft wide. He's eating more then Shadow did. Maybe he has hollow legs?

Piggy only got the 1 can mixed with maybe 1/4 cup dry. That was it. If he wanted anymore, he better go catch a mouse or two.

I know people that use those self feeders for cats, to that I'm not a fan because it is only dry.

Piggy was huge two, maybe I can dig up and old picture and take another picture an post it. You'll see why he was called Piggy.

That's one of the things I'm wondering about, but I want the vet to check and if he does have them treat him.

I'm also concerned about hyperthyroidism, and am REALLY hoping that isn't what it is. I don't think that's what it is but I know it's something to keep in mind and ask the vet about.

Milo is ALWAYS hungry, but hubby and I have found that feeding her the Blue Buffalo dry cat food seems to have made her feel fuller longer.

Milo is 20lbs and gets 3/4 a cup of food a day. She's techincally on a diet-- she should probably be getting closer to a cup. I've never seen a cat of any size need more than a cup of food a day.

Intestinal parasites is definitely a possibility with a stray. I would get him checked for that.

But in all honestly, my cats are royal pains in the you-know-what when it comes to food. They get fed not quite a half a cup a day of Wellness Core protein focused formula, both my 10 pound young male and my older female. My older female was only being fed about a quarter cup when she was on her diet and NEEDED to lose weight, and it got bumped to not quite 1/2 when her metabolism got better. She went from 14 pounds to 8. Their weight stays absolutely perfect, but they always are convinced that I'm starving them.

Thanks y'all.

Yeah I know the poor starving kitty routine, Pirate lived for meal times but even he wasn't as bad as Cat. Maybe that's because I raised Pirate and he knew the routine, he'd get half his dry food in the morning, then the other half and a can of food at night.

Cat seems to have slowed down a little with the eating since I upped the canned food, and we're supposed to go to the vet sometime next week. I'll let y'all know when the appt is and what happens. Fingers and toes crossed that he's chipped and has a loving family out there that's missing him like crazy and he can be reunited with them!

In theory it could be a few health problems that could cause him to eat and eat and eat. But if he was a stray for any period of time it could be learned behavior too. Or he could just be a piggy!

Well, I'm back from the vet without Cat. He had a microchip, yay boo I dunno mixed feelings about it.

His owner or maybe I should say former owner, had rehomed him and another cat and told the person to keep him inside for at least a few days. Well the person let him out the next day and he ran off. His name is Hansel and the other cats name is/was Gretel. Anyway, former owner was happy that he's safe and will be picking him up from the vet around 1pm so Hansel gets to go home.

I'm happy for him and former owner but apparently I had become much more attached to him then I suspected because I miss him like crazy. It's amazing how attached I became in 2 short weeks even knowing that he probably had a home and even if he didn't I wasn't going to be able to keep him.

Happy ending overall, he's safe and sound and is going back to someone who must have taken great care of him :)

Yeah, I told my neighbor, Rusty's owner, now I can go back to trying to steal Rusty LOL.

Truthfully though Rusty, the brat, quickly learned that I wasn't going to let Cat attack him and took to strolling over and antagonizing Cat. If I wasn't around I really think they would have gotten into a fight, and poor Rusty would have had the worst of it because he's declawed.
