High Value Treats

Hi all...

Was wondering what you all use as a higher value treat when working with your dog?

I've been watching some of Kikopup's Youtube channel and she suggested using real meat or cheese as the high value treat. Anyone use something specific... deli meats?

Chicken, ham, turkey, tuna, cheese of all kinds, peanut butter, etc. Some dogs like bread, some like fruits and veggies (my Aussie loves apples, and my Chinese crested loves carrots). It just depends on what your dog likes! :)

I can get a response with a ton of different items, but was more curious what items, if any, are saved for special occasions or a job really well done?

Basically, something other (and more valuable) than an everyday treat that I or a guest feeds him just for kicks or for simple tricks and entertainment.

Wally's high value list:

Bread (I shred a slice of bread and make small "Bread balls" out of it - usually get about 40-50 per slice)

Deli meat (take your pick)

Bits of "human food" leftovers (as long as there's no onions, not overly spicy - plain pasta works well for Wally)

Hot dogs

Sausages

Pancakes ("I want pancakes!" - Stewie Griffin) - I break these up like the slice of bread. One decent-sized pancake is usually enough.

Bits of pepperoni

Bits of velveeta cheese (or string cheese, etc)

and probably more - can't think of any more.

I ONLY use high-value treats/foods for Wally (not that he has many low value treats/foods...) as it gets him and keeps him wound up and excited, which is what I want. :) I don't follow the usual "high value only for best performance/hardest jobs", though. I want everything he does to be highly rewarding so it's seared into his brain that much more.

I use hot dogs cut into teeny tiny pieces and the same with cheese. Tess gave me a suggestion once that stuck with me, and it has been a great system. I cut up all of her high value treats into itsy bitsy pieces (I don't want her to get fat haha), and then I put it all in a big gallon sized bag in the freezer. I keep a small baggie with a handful of the treats in the fridge. When I run low, I take a handful from the freezer and put it in the fridge baggie. I only had to cut everything up once, and we still haven't reached the end of the stash on the freezer. So it's lasted us a good 2 months so far.

Cannon loved anything meaty. It was cheapest for me to cook chicken and cut it up into tiny pieces. He ignored veggies and starch unless he was really hungry. His tummy did awful on cheese, so I never used it. :p

My dog eat anything, but I usually us left over things we had for diner OR I use pieces of meat that we cut from meat ( ie, those bad cut steaks where you have to cut away all the area with fat). I cut em up into little peices and treats are served :D

I use hotdogs (cut into small pieces), cheese, & peanut butter. My dogs actually drool when I go to the "magic cabinet" that contains peanut butter - They will work their butts off for any of the high value treats listed. I change it up to keep things interesting. The smell of a hotdog or cheese-need I say more :D

Frozen smelt for both.

Jalepenos or serranos for Tesla - she loves spicy food and has eaten whole habenero plants before.

Chasing a laser point for Ratchet - only at the end of a session though. He tends to lose his brain after that.

The deli meats all contain to much salt and most have nitrates in them.
I buy turkey or chicken strips at the market and fry them in a skillet then chop into small bites. you can put them in the small snack zip lock bags and freeze what you cant use in 3 days. My dogs love them and it cost a lot less then most all meat treats. Plus you don't get all of these unwanted additives. PS don't you love Kikopup

clover's lowest value treat is kibble... for a while now, i've been taking scoops of kibble and mixing it with chopped up hot dog then refridgerating it. the kibble smells like the hotdogs, and gets a little soft... we use that for 80-90% of his training. next up are natural balance rolls, which are basically another dog food, i use that for most of his other training, it is definitely higher value than the kibble/kibble mix, keeps pretty well so i don't have to worry about it spoiling if i'm out and about somewhere/leave it out for a while, and it can be put in your pocket if needed, without being too messy (tends to dry and get crumbly) ...
i try to save higher value stuff for some of our more intense training sessions, like when we work on reactivity or in high distraction areas. usually in these cases i will bring a combo of treats with me, fresh cooked or canned meats and sometimes hot dogs. that way i can really reserve the highest value reward for something really special. clover's FAVORITE thing is cheese, but it makes him really farty if he gets too much, so i don't give it to him often, lol, i consider it my secret weapon. oh, i also use some jerky type treats, i like to have them around so that new people he meets can give them to him (he is/was afraid of meeting new people) some people see how big he is and are afraid he will take their hand off when he goes for the treat, he's generally pretty good/careful about it but to make everyone feel better, i like the bigger pieces, especially when the new person is a child and i like to have a special treat just for that. the jerky treats are also good "keepers" so you don't have to worry too much about spoiling...

for a while, i was giving him cooked chicken for treats all the time, and i think it sorta lost it's value for him, so i had to work to get him down to the kibble mix, lol he used to just spit the kibble out if i gave it to him! if we were outside, he didn't even care about the NB rolls because it was either too exciting/too scary... now i can actually do kibble outside and i'm also able to mix in more and more secondary reinforcers for him... writing this made me realize how far we've come!
