Yes....you read that right.....

I am foster failing (adopting one of my foster kittens) and during surgery today they found out 'she' was in fact a hermaphrodite! It was very odd to get a picture sent to my cell during a work meeting of a surgery in progress with "the bottom is a testical, the top is an ovary" and as I am typing "oh wow! Whose that" I get another that says....this is your BonBon LOL

Very interesting stuff. She also has a heart murmur :( grade 3-4. This saddens me but will not stop me from adopting her...er him? :p

Interesting! I wonder if there might be future medical complications or a mix of behaviors for either gender. Of course after spay/neuter don't most animals kind of act the same anyway?

I read that later on one side's behavior may take over...but I don't know if that means if they are not altered? I didn't have time to talk to the vet today, she is still needing to write a medical release so have tons of questions for her tomorrow lol

If both ovaries and testicles were removed, then you shouldn't have any behavioral issues from that... unless tissue remained or there is an extra of one or the other.

The heart murmur unfortunately doesn't surprise me.. I'd expect you'll find more congenital issues at some point.

Foster failing is the exact reason I DON'T foster... lol. Couldn't do it. I already have "too many" animals...!

Can't tell much regarding the whole intersex thing (FYI, hermaphrodite is a slur for intersex people - probably not too bad when applied to animals. I'm just conditioned to not use it and point out the issues of using the word)

Gender neutral pronouns I can help with though. ey/em/eir, ze/hir/hir, xe/xem/xir, ne/nir/nir yo/yo/yos. Yeah, there are a lot because english is stupid. My preference is singular they. Prescriptivists can suck my toaster since I have both Shakespeare and the Canadian Government on my side.

Fieldslacker - Wait whats wrong with using the term hermaphrodite if in fact the animal or human has both sex organs? I have never known anyone or thing that was before so god forbid I use it in a bad context LOL

Holly - she is quite healthy so far. My vet wants to perform an xray on her on Monday. I will then get a referral to a specialist :)

awp - I was a bit nervous at first, but realize a few reasons why I should go ahead with the adoption :) One being she is uber sweet and loves my dogs!

Oh I'm sure you meant no offence since it's not well known. Like I said I'm just conditioned to point it out. The main thing that is wrong with it is that a lot of intersex people consider it a slur, so it is. I don't know the exact why since it don't need to know more beyond that to stop using a term.

Its considered a slur because of something in greek mythology. I learned it in one of my social work classes last year. I not well known so don't feel bad. I didn't even know until that class.

Sorry to go completely OT. Things have changed a lot in the last ten years in the LGBT community. For example "tolerance" used to be the word everyone used as a positive of what the community wanted. Now tolerance is seen more negatively. People want acceptance. Also, i think boys don't cry was set in the south (correct me if I'm wrong) where interracial couples still get yelled at for walking down the street holding hands.

How's the kitten doing? ;)

I honestly did not mean it in a derogatory way at all...It is written down on my medical release, and is in her file, so I don't know if location matters?

She is awesome :) I called a specialist to see how much an echocardiogram is. Her heart murmur is able to be surgically repaired if she indeed has it, but its pretty much required I believe. So wish us luck! :) I will post pics of her on here in a few actually!

That's great!

I wasn't trying to make you feel bad, just adding to the conversation. I actually would have written an ETA about how I'm assuming with animals vets probably use medical terms, versus socially acceptable ones, but I ran out if time. ;)
