Hello, I'm new to these forums :)

Was wondering if anyone could help me regarding this dog's breed? (Sorry some of the pics are so big!)

She's a rescue and we were told (not by a rescue centre, but her previous owner who is a friend of my dad's ex-gf, but maybe she was told this by the rescue centre, I dunno) she was a Lhasa Apso/German Shepherd cross (and I think it says this on her vet notes and Pet Passport)... but I really don't think there's any German Shepherd in her (not the texture of coat, not the colour of coat, not the tail, not the ears, not the size, not the character... you get the idea!)...

I'm thinking maybe Lhasa/Tibetan Terrier OR cross of these or one of these crossed with something else? Or a bit of a mix? My knowledge of breeds/dogs in general is pretty rubbish

You can kinda see in comparison to the other dogs, but she's medium-sized.

Temperament-wise, she's a really lovely lil doggy, full of character (an example would be she has no interest in sticks/balls herself, but runs off with them to tease the other dogs), loves a cuddle/to sit on laps, likes to 'herd' (people!), has a high-pitched bark which she uses in a 'warning' (not aggressive at all, just 'there are people approaching') way.

Please no comments that she should be groomed better. It's my dad's dog and he doesn't brush his own hair, let's just say. She's very happy and has a 'clip' (courtesy of my dad ) in the summer to keep her cool. She has a good life and I hope the photos reflect that. If I got a similar breed myself, I WOULD put a lot of time into keeping its coat nice.

I ask this question cos I want a CLONE of her for myself (doesn't live with me and is getting old anyway :()! I have a Labrador (in some of the pics) who I love to pieces and is great fun, but is a bit too much work for me (if my mum wasn't around) as my health isn't great and she needs lots of exercise etc.

Oh, and, if you were wondering, it's different German Shepherds on the bench and on the beach/street ;) And not all these dogs are mine! The German Shepherds (the older one has sadly passed away) and the dog in question are my dad's and the Labradoodle and Spaniel he was looking after for my aunty and a friend.

I always thought she looked a bit like Pippin from 'Come Outside' (according to Wikipedia 'a mixed breed dog, possibly part Tibetan Terrier, possibly part Bearded Collie'). Other people have said this too actually!

And the dog off the first series of 'Doc Martin' (looked online and not much info, but suggestions are some kind of cross with Bearded Collie, Tibetan Terrier and something I've never heard of called a Smithfield)...

Any help much appreciated :)

raffles - Looking at pics of them, she does look a lot like a Bearded Collie, but, reading about them, it doesn't really fit - like it says they're bouncy/jumpy and she NEVER has been. It's likely there's a bit of one in there somewhere though if she is a jumble! I think she's way too big to be a Norfolk Terrier? That would be cool though cos I'm a Norfolk gal and most of the pics I posted of her were actually taken IN Norfolk!

Tibetan terrier was my first thought.

Don't really see Beardie especially since there was no white phase.

That being said, getting a certain breed for a look or because it matches a different dog isn't really a good idea, or particularly fair on the dog.

I thought Tibetan Terrier too at first. Lhasa apso is another option. Maybe a mix? What about a havanese though?

If I were you I would start looking at reputable breeders of these breeds and discuss with them about the temperament of their dogs. People here on DF can help you with what to look for when finding a breeder.

FailedSlacker - I wouldn't get a dog based on looks (if I was I'd get a Chow Chow [black please!] cos they look all cute and cuddly... but I know enough to know that would NOT be a good idea/match for me!) or to replace/replicate this dog (well, maybe would be trying to do that a little...). That's not what I'm saying and I was joking (I think ;)) when I said I'd like to clone her! I just know that her general character and activity needs are EXACTLY what I would look for in a dog... and would be a good fit for me and my lifestyle... so would like to know what breed/cross she is :) And I don't think she's a HavaneseXRottie, haha.

zoorun and TMsam - Never heard of Havanese, but looking them up I'm not sure a 'toy' dog would be for me? Even if the dog I'm talking about isn't a Tibetan Terrier, I've been reading about them and think they'd be what I'm looking for. I think I'd consider Independent Tibetan Terrier Rescue though rather than breeders/puppies...

Thank you for the input :)

Not a Tibetian body & BTW Tibetians are not really terriers.... My Tibetian was the sweetest dog in the universe they are very quiet, not barkers and one of the things that make them a little different too, is they have flat feet!
Bernadette was my loving companion for 13 years until cancer got her! (these pictures are from 1992 the other dog is my RidgebackX)
I see Lhasa in your cute pup....those front legs!

LuvMyFluff - From reading, they DO bark... quite a lot? Maybe yours was just an exception? I know they're not true terriers, but, no offence to any terriers owners/lovers, that's a good thing in my book. I'll have a look to see if she has flat feet ;) Was yours a full Tibetan? Does look different to my dad's doggy, longer legs etc. As I said in my first post, Lhasas are the other breed I thought she might be or be crossed with, just going by looks (don't really know much about breeds). I love the pic of you all chillin'... and looking a bit 90s :p

Yes she was all Tibetian and structure is, that they are square built.... legs in proportion to body and the topline is straight. I was lucky I guess that she was not very vocal! (unless you were intruding)
She was very sweet but had a mind of her own....when we took walks and she got tired, she would go to the nearest house and sit on their porch til I convinced her we had to go! This was the 90's.....we felt safe walking our dogs off leash in our our neighborhood! She also hated grass and hated going camping with us. She was pretty laid back, unless you were a threat, was never a behavior problem at all! I never had to formally train this dog she was so well behaved! Have never, ever, met another dog like her! Sweet Brave and Spunky is how I would describe her! Definitely a free thinker!
