Feeding?

When I first got my cat, I refused to free feed her. I didn't want a fat cat. She got fixed. Bear moved in. She was losing weight due to stress. So I started free feeding to make sure she got enough food. Now she's gained a good amount of weight. But do I keep free feeding? I don't want her to lose weight... but I don't want a fat animal either..? Any feeding suggestions?

Do you feed wet food, or only dry?

You can always free feed a specific amount each day, instead of an unlimited amount (if that's what you're doing). That way, she can eat it whenever she wants, but you have control over how much she's getting.

If you feed wet food as well, she can eat less dry food to compensate.

We free feed and unlimited amount, which is why I'm worried about weight. I didn't want to do that when I first got her, but I started doing it after she start losing weight. Maybe I'll cut it down to like 1cup a day? I'd like to cut down, I just don't know how much....

We only feed dry food, because when the second cat (Bear) was here, he'd throw a fit and scatter the dry food all over the floor if he didn't get canned food every night. :eyeroll:

You really should feed her at least half wet food it not all wet food. In general cats do not drink enough water to compensate for an all dry food diet and can get kidney and bladder infections. Wet Food Diet: Is it Better For Your Cat? | petMD

When I had my cat I measured out his food and split it between morning and evening. He was fed kibble morning and evening and a small can of Fancy Feast canned food in the evening. He was a pig and usually finished all his food in one sitting, but if he wanted to just graze that was fine with me.

With my cats (when I had them) I would "free feed" dry throughout the day about 2-3 cups divided between 5-6 cats and then each cat would get half a can of wet in the morning and then 1/2 a can in the evening...... Of course most of my cats where also "Barn" cats so lord only knows what they would scrounge up themselves throughout the day....

I feed mainly wet so don't free feed at all. On occasion, I will put a little bit of dry down if I think neither of them ate enough. Usually they will scarf the dry food down, so they aren't grazing all day anyway. It's more like a snack.
