i've never used it myself, but i've heard that "angel eyes" works wonders...

 

Except the powder contains antibiotics. Not something I would want to give my dog on a daily basis.

But what can I use to clean his eyes and the hair around them?

 

my understanding of tear stains is that it is some sort of infection (yeast?) in the hair around the eyes-not sure of exactly what sorry, but that is why external cleaning doesn't really help...

my dog doesn't get them, but i use a warm wet rag to wipe around his eyes when he has eye boogers...

 

Food quality can affect it, even som'thing as simple as treats can. I also hear that water quality can affect it too, so som' people will use bottled water to give their dogs.

My understanding now is that angel eyes is an antibiotic, and many people are no longer using it.

 

I bought a product called Diamond eyes from vitacoat, It's basically a cleaner which you apply with a cotton swab every day... First try didn't yield much result. Anyone know about this product and knows if it works?

 

Maggie gets tear stains if I don't use Eqyss Micro-tek shampoo on her. Both my girls are bathed weekly with it, and it really works to kill the yeast and keep it from making them itchy and leaving red stains. It's a soap-free shampoo so it won't dry out their coat and smells great too! The best price I've found for it is from Country Mile Animal Health for $9.62 for 16oz. Not the nicest website, but I have always received my order in a timely manner and always been satisfied.

 

Thanks, I'll look into that! Boris is on a sensitive skin shampoo for now 'cause his coat and skin were feeling dry and he was itchy. It has helped a lot relieve his discomfort. That and some essential oil drops for his coat...

 

I have heard that you can gently massage a thin layer of Vaseline on the area to prevent this stain.

I really like TrueBlue Eye Wipes. They're all natural, no harsh chemicals, but they really work. I get them at Amazon.com. I agree with some of the other posts about not wanting to use those products that have anti-biotics that you put in their food.
