Sigh... Kitten's are not recyclable, people!

Sometimes the people in my condo complex drive me crazy. Okay, more like most of the time. Someone apparently found two kittens (about two and a half weeks old) and didn't feel like going through the effort of calling the shelter or raising them, so they dumped them in a cardboard box into the co-mingled recycling bin... The same bin that has other random recyclables such as cleaning supply plastic bottles... Lots of people don't look when they toss stuff in there, so the poor things could very easily have been squashed, licked up some toxic chemicals, or worse yet, gotten carried off in the recycling truck. There are so many better places you can leave kittens if you're too lazy and heartless to get them directly to someone who will take care of them!

Thankfully one of our neighbors found them there and is taking care of them, but since she can't feed them during the day when she's at work my husband and I are helping (he's unemployed and I work from home for half of most days). I'm too much of a softy when it comes to the little fuzzballs... Here's to 4+ weeks of hitting my allergy meds hard and hoping that my two cats are good daddy cats while we "babysit" :eyeroll:

We start "babysitting" them tomorrow, I'll try to get some pics up then :)

And seebrown, you're not alone, I think kittens are cuter too! Oops, I guess I shouldn't say that here on a dog forum, eh? I love both dogs and cats for different reasons, but you just can't beat the kitten fuzz cuteness ;)

People just plain suck sometimes. I am so glad that your neighbor found them and has good friends like you/your husband to help raise them. One of the best foster parents we ever had was a male cat -- I'll have to see if I can dig up my favorite picture of him and one of his little charges when I get home.

My husband's family hand raised James (the cat in my avatar) from when his litter was 5 days old and their male tabby was constantly mothering them around, so I know its possible. It was so cute watching him chase down the kittens as they crawled out of the box and carry them right back. He even bathed them and helped "encourage" them to go to the bathroom by pushing on them and bathing them like a momma cat would :) Hopefully James takes after his surrogate daddy!

People are horrible! Kudos to you and your neighbor for helping these poor little kitties out! Many moons ago, my Aunt found a moving cardboard box in the park during one of her daily jogs. Upon opening it, she found a fawn pug puppy who had been so poorly bred that his eyes went in completely different directions and were almost popped out of his skull more than is normal for a pug. He also had mangled rear legs and awful hip joints. About $3000 worth of surgeries later, Pugsley Piddle Boy lived a happy 14 years with my aunt before passing away of old age at home on his favorite pillow.

People who take in discarded animals are heroes, and people who do the discarding in a inhumane manner are scum.

So it sounds like we won't be kitty-sitting after all, I'm a bit frustrated :( It turns out the story was a bit more convoluted than my neighbor told me when she asked for our help taking care of the kittens. It was actually a completely different neighbor (we'll call him Neighbor A) that found the kittens, who then gave them to his sister temporarily to take care of them while he asked around to find someone to care for them. He talked to my upstairs neighbor (we'll call her Neighbor B) who then asked me for help. Neighbor A was supposed to get the kittens from his sister and give them to Neighbor B Tuesday night. He never did, and Neighbor B has been trying to get a hold of him ever since to find out what happened, but he keeps dodging her. We don't have his phone number, we only know where he lives, and we've left notes on his door asking him to call us but gotten nothing. I can't tell if he's just rarely home or if he's home when we come by and just doesn't want to answer the door.

Supposedly the whole reason Neighbor A's sister didn't want to become the permanent foster for the kittens was because she didn't want to wake up in the middle of the night to feed the kittens, which meant they were going 8 hours or so without food... Kittens this young NEED to be fed every 3-4 hours, plus stimulated to use the bathroom, so I have a nasty suspicion that they died due to improper care and that now Neighbor A is dodging us because he doesn't want to tell us :( I know I haven't met the kittens yet so I have no reason to be attached at all, but I'm really worried for the little guys... I just wish the guy would tell us whats going on! Argh!

Maybe the sister decided she really liked caring for them and didn't want to give them up and they're still alive and healthy... *crosses fingers* I can only hope :(

The kittens are okay :D ! My upstairs neighbor finally got the kittens from the other neighbor this weekend, so today's the first day we got to kitten-sit. My husband has a bunch of pictures on his facebook album:

Also have a couple videos uploaded...
"Momma" Sandy bathing the girl kitten:
The kittens playing together:

Toby, the white/orange cat in some of the pictures has taken on the "surrogate dad" role, while our girl Sandy has taken on the "momma dog" role. Sandy apparently doesn't think we're cleaning the kittens or "stimulating" them to go potty well enough and is helping us with that chore :p The light kitten is the boy, while the brown/black tabby is the girl. They're about 5 weeks old now.

I'm sorry I don't know what it could be other than she's still a bit unsure what exactly she should do with them, but I think if it's that then she should get over it quickly. ;)
