Scared new kitty...

My son called me last night and told me that two of his friends (who are roommates) are moving out of town but are unable to take their cat with them. He said they were desperate to find a home for her as they were afraid they would have to take her to the pound. So we took her in. All day today she has been very scared and hides behind the furniture. She is also terrified of our lab (who doesn't understand why she doesn't want to play with him). She has bopped him on the nose a few times as a warning and he is starting to gain some healthy respect for her space. I could lock her in our laundry room but I want her to be able to explore the house. How long does it typically take for cats to become comfortable in their surroundings? Are we talking days, weeks, months?

rykersmama, depends from kitty to kitty. Might be talking weeks rather than days if this kitty was born feral. Look up the cat clicker yahoo group, those people can help you to start kitty off on the right track. Doesn't matter if you're not planning on ever really train your kitty, but c\t can work wonders to get that neccessary first trust built.

Honestly, lock her in the laundry room for at least a few days. Once she's comfortable there, and with you, allow her more space, but consider putting up a baby gate that she can go under or through to keep the dog out of the laundry room so she can have a safe space.

Lock her in the laundry room. When we brought home our cat, she was shut in my room for days while she adjusted to the house. It was probably a week or two before she even ventured downstairs(where the dog is). Adjustment periods vary from cat to cat.

Thanks all. Okay... consensus is the laundry room so that's where she's going. After I posted this, kitty drew blood from our lab so it's probably best to give her her own space for a while. I hope she starts to feel more comfortable soon.

It really depends on the cat. All my cats have varied. But the longest took about three to four months before being truly comfortable wandering the entire one bedroom apartment haha. He's still super skiddish but he will at least cuddle with me at night now.

Good luck!

Consider diffusing Lavender in the house or "Peace and Calming" you can get Therapeutic Grade A Essential Oils thru Young Living, - here is the lady that helped me with my dogs - my girl was very timid and had anxiety problems. Go to her facebook page and like it, you will get a bunch of different ads come up about the uses of oils for pets and children and humans in general.

VERY true. If you use any sort of calming product, I'd recommend the Comfort Zone or a calming collar specifically for cats(I personally have had no luck with the collars because my cat hated the collar so much he scratched up his neck trying to get it off). I have had a lot of success though with the Comfort Zone difuser, but it's pretty darn expensive.

I think you'll find kitty will calm down just fine within a few weeks though, with or without any calming products.
