I have a terrier mixed female dog. She is around 11/12 years old. She is still very happy but a bit slow. She finds it hard to get up on chairs etc for about the past year or two.
She just got what we think is a stroke, her back legs started shaking and she couldnt walk on them and her eyes went a lil wierd. It lasted for about 1 minute and then she can walk again. She got two others of something similar to this in the past 6/7 months.
What to do? We rang the vet and we got to ring back in 2 hours for an appointment this evening. Will we have to put her down? Shes fine again now but what to do.

Thank you very much, jasminesmom,
I was bringing my cat out for a walk outside (yes my cat walks on a lead and harness lol)
I asked my dog does she want to come like she always does, she jumpes straight up and came with us. Outside she was walking, rolling around in the chippings and the grass.. Perfectly normal.

It sounds to me more like a seizure or a focal seizure if there was a lack of grand mal activity such as flailing legs air snapping and the sort if she was only affected for a minute or 2. That is typical of seizure activity. A stroke would leave her debilitated and disoriented for hours. My dog had a stroke and it took her several days to recover. Interested in hearing what the vet has to say. Seizures ae VERY controllable with phenobarbitol, but if she's only having 1 every couple of months the vet won't likely recommend meds.

Thanks for everyones in-put.
We are just back from the vet and she had a mini stroke. He checked her heart and it was fine and then he flashed a light in her eyes and he knew from that I think he said something about them being a bit dazed after it or sumthing like that.
He gave her an injection and we got 7 tablets to give her, 1 a day for a week. He was very happy with her though overall with her age, just a lil bit of weight to be lost :p
Think I will be going for loads of walks with my cat now and bringing the dog with me :p
Thanks everyone for eveything, vet said she shoudl be fine and if she gets anymore to just let him know.

What type of pill did he give her? If it was a steroid and it was not a stroke but a seizure then it could make things worse. Flashing a light in her eyes could show compromised brain activity if one eye is more or less reactive than the other, but I would still want the vet to explain why he thinks it was stroke and not seizure. Good luck. Here is some more info for you to decide if your vet was accurate in their assessment of stroke.
