more bad press for the pit bull :( a dog wandering on the streets with no owner/leash ran up to a female and attacked her biting her face. She had to be hospitalized and the Pit was taking by animal control. SIGH. I hope the girl is okay and though the dog will most likely be euthanized, I wish almost it WASN'T a pit but another breed that wasn't an "aggressive" breed, though I feel bad for the girl.

Pitbull Bites Young Girl in SE DC

its a developing story so i guess they don't know how the girl is now or the dog.

Oh, dear... :(

Surely this wouldn't have even been called to our attention by Fox if it wasn't it a pit. I swear, the media seems to try their hardest to bring pits into a bad light...

The poor dog is surely going to be killed, likely without any further look at its personality or reasons for biting the girl. Yes, reasons. The articles says, "Young girl". Is it not reasonable to believe that maybe the girl provoked the dog? Not on purpose, but maybe just standing over it, running up to it, etc?

I do feel very bad for the girl. Poor thing may be scarred for life and never want to be around another dog again. I hope the injuries weren't too bad, and that they heal up and she has no scars to show.

We just had an attack by a pit on a woman walking down the street...the pit jumped an 8 foot wall and grabbed her rib area. I did not follow up on the story so I dont know what all happened but its sad.

I don't know if the girl was unaccompanied or if there was someone with her, but it made it sound like she was alone. That is not smart, where was her parent(s)?

And if people just secured their freaking dogs, we wouldn't have these issues.

Exactly. And then we have one more voter (or family of voters) who would support BSL :(

What of the owner? You must have an idea your dog is capable of this? What steps did they take? thoughts?

I think yes and no. Its hard to tell b/c sometimes an owner may say their dog has never bitten anyone or even been in a situation for them to know how the dog would react, or the dog may have actually never shown aggression and the girl could have thrown something at it, hugged it (like Crio said), ran away screaming, etc. I can tell you one thing...running is a common mistake and IMO leads to some instincts of chase and bite...sometimes I wonder if thats what happened and the dog was not even being aggressive at first, but with the fighting, caused the dog to bite down more.

If owners know their dogs aggressive or skittish and they do not properly confine the dog especially when unsupervised then its their fault.

I have also seen dogs bite people who have never shown the capability of biting. Sometimes it just takes one situation to cause a normally ok dog to react.

Good questions! lol

so I watched the video

judging by the dogs body language the small bandage on the girls face and this

The girl says she was near Chesapeake and 6th Street Southeast when the dog suddenly came at her, knocked her down and then bit her face.
I wonder if he was trying to play with her and has poor bite inhibition? Kiwi has banged her fat head into my face before with an open mouth, and it smarts...I wouldn't take much pressure to break skin...IMO if that dog was viscious, she wouldn't have a face, or he would have grabbed a limb, I mean why knock her down? that makes no sense...dogs jump up on people they are trying to greet.

I couldn't have said it better!

They dont give 2 hoots about what the scenario and the damage actually mean. If its a dog that knocked down someone and caused some kind of injury LET ALONE A PIT BULL then it was vicious. HOW SILLY HUH?!

According to the article, a representative of either a rescue or shelter, mentioned something about dog's instincts and if a dog run's at you, fight the instinct to run and instead make yourself small in a ball and protect your face and other vital parts. To me, that hints that that is what the girl didn't do and she tried to run away (prey-predator instinct then kicked in)

I haven't read the links - sorry - but did they actually show a pic of the dog? Pitties always get the blame. I read a news article where a lab had bitten it's owner. Next day it was a lab cross pit and the day after the dog had metamorphosed into a full blown pit bull terrier.
Where is the owner of the dog in all this?

First off cute dog (your photo)!!!

Good point also! I remember watching a thing where a dog had been tazed by cops and dragged by animal control while on the no bite poles or whatever they call them, and they continuously called it a pit...it was a white boxer. They tazed it b/c it was loose and "showing signs of aggression" and pits were banned from the town. It was more like fear IMO. I dont remember if I saw it on here or what but it broke my heart.

They had a picture of a reddish pit-looking dog in the link with a leash they were trying to get into a car, but I don't know if it was the dog or not. to be honest animal control typically will use a catch/bite pole if a dog is a freak out dog when leashed or shows aggression to the AC officer, but in the pic it looked like the slip over the head leash they used wasn't even taut, there was slack in the leash, so if that WAS the dog, it probably wasn't "aggressive" but really the girl just invoked some chase instinct in the dog. They could have just easily stuck some random picture in the article.

off topic on my own post hehe, but:

and they continuously called it a pit...it was a white boxer.
That's like in animal cops Pennsylvania on animal planet once, they rescued a white dog that was emaciated. They called it a Weimeraner throughout the WHOLE show and it was a freaking White Doberman! soo obvious too! And the a shelter worker at that shelter at the end adopted the dog and was like "I have owned weimeraners all my life and I love the breed so I decided to adopt this dog" WHATTT?? I couldn't yell enough at the tv that it was not a Weimeraner and I mean these people WORK for an animal rescue league they should know their breeds! Every time a re-run of that episode come now I have to change the channel cus it gets me soo annoyed :p

the accused dog in the video looked pit or staffie to me :) Now, the question is, do they have the right dog?

I remember that whole white boxer/tased thing...that was awful.

lol, I had a shelter worker correct me when I called a dog an american eskimo. She like...its not a AM its a SPITZ. I looked at her and was like "an AM is a SPITZ". I looked back at the owner and hes like "yeah she an american eskimo"

On animal cops they kept calling these very obvious sharpei mixes, pit bulls. Stupid.
