Niko may have a little brother... HELP ASAP!!

On my drive home from visiting my sister I saw a kitten almost get hit trying to cross the road. I pulled over and searched for him in the grass area between the two highways (one for each direction, two lanes each) and found him.

SOOO tiny. I think maybe 6-9 weeks. Pictures to come later.

I stopped and got some kitten stuff from Walmart and since all they had was Hartz I just bathed him in Johnsons baby wash (he smelled like manure, they are working the fields here currently).

So. Since it is a "wild" kitten, I assume it isnt litter trained. I got a litter box and litter and added some used litter from my mom's cat box. I have put him in there a couple times and he hasn't gone yet.

HELP! How do you litter train a ferrel kitten? He is really tame though, affectionate and likes to stand on my shoulder and inside my sweater (where he spent the ride home at).

He is living in Niko's crate with water, food (hard and soft), a "cave" and blanket to snuggle in and a litter box.

Any "new kitten" advice VERY welcome. Pictures to come.

Looks healthy except has little sores around his mouth...?? Anyone know what that is form? (pix to come)

Flea combed him and found none. Going to clean his ears now as there is some gunk in the lower parts, not much though.

Ate some of Niko's soft dog food, didnt want the kitten food. Is purring his head off inside my sweater now.

No fear of Niko, he touched noses and rubbed his face on Niko while purring! :D

Here he is, inside my sweater purring his heart out.

Anyone know if the bumps on mouth are something to be worried out??

It is hard to see what those bumps look like. Can you describe them?

I started my dumped kittens with sand because that is all I had on hand. The only way I know how to litter train is to confine them with their box. I'm sure if you wait long enough he will have to go and use it.

At his age he would probably do best on canned food.

He is a cutie! That is awesome he doesn't mind Niko.

She is so cute. I really don't know anything about cats I thought cats just instinctively used the litter box. You might want to just try placing her in there when she looks like she is about to go.

I will add that I would have him vet cchecked asap (I'm sure you were going to do that). From what I can see the bumps look pretty nasty and obvi abnormal. Any other oddities about him? Discharge from anywhere?

Better pix of mouth area, I think they are scabs??

The rest of him is normal, clean bum, not too skinny but kinda lean, bright clear eyes, no eye goop. Vet was already closed by the time I found him but I am calling tomorrow. :)

Oh yeah they do look like scabs. Pretty scraped up little chin. I would def clean it up and watch it for infection.

aaawwww

Could be raw from rubbing on something, but I'd definetly get him vet checked.

I've never had to litter train a kitten, its mostly "pre-loaded". I'd confine him to a small area (decent sized dog crate, or the bathroom) with the litter box when you can't supervise till you're sure he's using it.

I will get a warm wash clothe and see if I can clean it some. Will get some soft food tomorrow as well.

I have never really been a "cat person" but.... :S He is SO CUTE!
Are all kittens so snuggly, will he maybe stay snuggly or is it just when they are kittens..??

The kittens I've had all figured it out on their own. Typically if they didn't go in the littler bin they'd go somewhere else-so we'd move the litter bin there and clean the spot until they liked the litter bin, then moved it away eventually and they just followed. Our kittens were snuggly but one grew out of it a bit.

It almost looks like he got hit by a car and JUST got missed or something. :( It looks pretty red so I'd watch for infection too, but it doesn't look deep and looks like it's started scabbing/healing already on it's own so I wouldn't be too worried. I'd just give both types of food wet and dry to see what he prefers to start..it maybe hurt to get wet food splattered in, or hurt to chew with him jaw too much so give him the choice? You could do the standard boiled chicken thing too, if Niko will share :p

Pictures taken in our dinning room it is being remolded so dont mind the chewed up wood or extra planks of wood you see in the background.

SOO CUTE! ♥♥ And still a tiny bit wet from his first bath...

Any guess on age? Old enough to not need milk right?? By my hand for comparison:

No fear of Niko. Niko is being super gentle and calm around him.♥

Whenever I put him in the crate he starts mewing... Should I just ignore it? I put one of my shirts in there with him, in the "cave".

He doesnt hiss at me or anything. When I open the crate he comes right to me. When I pick him up he rubs his face on me and purrs...

I guess I got lucky??!? He seems to have no fear, not even of Niko... :ponder:

He was definitely a stray though. He was in the center on the grass of a 4 lane highway with nothing but corn fields for a ways (quite far from any farm houses). They were plowing the fields right next to where I found him. :(

I found a set of feral kittens last summer. I fed them wet food at night and had kibble free fed. They did great! I found them both homes and they are now thriving 1.5 year old cats :) I'm sooooo excited for you! I'm not really a cat person either, but I would have loved to have kept the male that I found! Names?

Just a thought, but could the scabs be from being tossed out of a car and landing face-first?

He's super cute! It makes me almost want a cat....almost.

That's exactly what I was thinking.

He looks plently old enough to be eating solid food - I'd guess 8 or 9 weeks.

Re the litter training, just put him in it every once in a while, and he'll figure it out on his own, I'm sure. When I brought home my kitty, she didn't go potty for a surprisingly long time.

Oh gosh... I sure hope not QuestsMom. :( I seriously have pain in my stomach just thinking about it... I know some people are sick enough to do that though... But since he can walk fine I would say no? Wouldnt that break bones or give mental problems? He doesnt seem to have any of those problems that goodness... Would explain his friendliness though...:(

I am open to names!

I would like something unique (no "fluffy" or "spot" names) I want a name that has to do with being found, roads, highways, lanes.. ect But will take super cute/unique names that dont have anything to do with that too. Suggestions?? :ponder: :huddle:

I like Trek..!! Hmmm... :ponder:

I am also thinking of naming him Acorn (watership down) cause I saw a car near miss him and he tumbled/fell/ran back into the grass... (acorns fall from trees...):(
-It did not hit him though, I am sure, I was the car right behind it and that is how I first saw him. :(
