My rescue cat, Daryl

This is Daryl. I adopted him last October. He was a stray who had been attacked by some animal. Some people found him with a huge gash on his left shoulder area. They dropped him off at a vet who treated him pro bono and then turned him over to a shelter. I was looking at the cats in Petsmart. As I passed his cage, he put his paw out to get my attention and then pressed his face against the cage bars for me to rub. The rest is history :) He's just the perfect cat. He loves attention, he never gets into anything, and he's great with my dog. I never thought I was a cat person, but ha ha, I am. :p I'm even thinking of getting another one. Does anyone have 1 dog and 2 cats? I'm wondering how the dog will handle it.

Hi, Daryl is super handsome :D. What a lucky cat to have found such a great home. I too was never a cat person, then about 14 years ago my then 12 year old daughter wanted a cat, after much discussion we got our first kitten, Poppy. We now have Poppy & Tilly & a dog, Betsy. Both cats were used to my last dog as we had them first, & Betsy was deemed as cat friendly when we adopted her, which she is. I think as long as the new cat is used to dogs or at least calm enough to learn then I don't see a problem & your dog is obviously cat friendly. However, you may have more of a problem introducing the cats to each other, cats are not quite as accepting new comers.

Thanks JudyG. Your babies are very handsome too! Thanks also for the information about cats being less accepting. I've had my eye on a cat in the shelter, but I'm just so afraid of disrupting the balance in the house. I wish someone would adopt her already so I can quit following the Facebook page :D

That 2nd photo made me laugh...talk about leading the life... They are cute together.

I never had a cat of my own until I was like 24 or 25, then I took home an abandoned 1 year old kitten who had been hanging around our store all summer. The momma cat and other kittens disappeared one by one.

I had 2 dogs at the time and Ashley, my cat got on well with both of them, and the dogs, at first never paid her much mind. But over the years, Ashley and my one dog Hey You became kind of like buddies. If Hey You was outside, Ashley was right there with her. They slept close to each other on the sofa.

I had to put Hey You to sleep when she was 16, and I remember watching Ashley prowl around the house and outside looking for her. She would then jump up on the sofa go sit in the corner where Hey You use to sleep then let out a long wail...not a meow...a wail. It would leave me just in tears to see her so. Even now thinking about it, I'm tearing up, and Hey You passed away around 20+ years ago.

Ashley lived to be 21. After she passed away, I got my 2nd cat, Kayla. She acted like she might like a friend, whereas Ashley was cat aggressive. So I adopted her a friend named Shayle (spelled with the same letters as Ashley).

None of my dogs ever had issues with my cats. But when Shayle disappeared one year and I got Kayla another friend....for some reason, while Kayla and Shayle got along fine. Kayla and Song don't. They don't fight...they tolerate each other. Sometimes they will play chase...and look they they enjoy it, they look playful, until they catch each other then it's an instant fight.

So, I think dogs and cats have a better chance at getting along than cat and cats at times : ) Problem is, it takes a long time (there's a method to it) to properly introduce cats and even then you will never know how it will turn out.

Congrats on getting such a wonderful cat for your first one. I'm sure he's impressed with his new servant too. ;)

Also... your cat... reminds me one my sister and I took care of as kids. He had that beautiful white coat and butterscotch colored ears, head markings, and ring tail too.

We were pretty poor, but my dad's business was getting better, so mom and dad agreed to buy dry cat food for the cat and set up a spot for it on our roofed porch.
My dad did not believe in having cats in the house...as they got on counters and such. But my dad was the one who named the cat.

He named it Gonner....because he said if he ever came home and found we brought it into the house, it would be a gonner. lol.
(and, yeah, the cat was snuck a few times in the deepest cold of winter. Dad knew about it, but let it go, being we kept the cat in the bedroom and let her out once the sun came up).

StormyPeak - Hey You and Gonner - love those names! Sounds like your cats and dogs lived very long and happy lives!

Servant is a very fitting description. As I write, Daryl is meowing at me to get off the computer and go to bed. So I'd better say good night :D
