Hello guys how are you? I hope you all fine.

so this is weird I think my dog killed a Bird.

today afternoon I went to play with my dog on the front yard suddenly when I came trough the Door I found a black Bird Died I was very surprised. then I look at my dog its like there is nothing new on his face. then I look closely on the bird, The Bird Head was cut off. there is no head for the bird, only the bird body. and the Blood Looks Fresh its Red like it was died today and my dog was licking the bird blood. then My family told me This morning there was a lot of Feather on the other front yard but we didn't know he killed a bird.

Is my dog okay? I mean im worry about my dog if he have Rabies or something like that cause he is being aggressive this time not on me or anyone of my family, only on strangers who come in front of our house or cats. and he love other dogs he is playful with other dogs and with me as well he play with me and with my family he never attacked any of us. he hate strangers and cats and. before 2 months I saw him running after the birds.

my Dog is Labrador Cross.

He is between 6 months and 7 months old.

Note: how can I know if he had rabies ?

It's not unusual for dogs to kill prey animals. Certainly upsetting to some people, but not odd for the dog. My dog has killed a rabbit, a mouse, and a few birds; it happens.

Has your dog been vaccinated against rabies? You might want to contact your vet about potential issues with worms or other infections he could get from eating wild animals. Your vet can also tell you what symptoms to look for with rabies and if you need to be worried.

The aggression may be related to age or under-socialization. Check out the training and behavior stickies for training info, especially the one on leash reactivity as that could explain your dog's behavior.

well. I went to the vet and they give him one shot when he was 2 months old and they tell me to come after 2 weeks for the next shot. but I didn't go until now. the vet is far away from me. and im busy all time. so I look for the paper that the shot he took about what and I found this marked on his profile. Leptospirosis , Distemper, Parainfluenza, Hepatitis and pravo virus, the Rabies wasn't marked should I be worried?

and how can I know if he had rabies is it from the blood check? and if he bite me it is dangerous for me?

you really need to vaccinate your dog though even though he will be fine this time. If he does get rabies there is no cure.

Keeping your dog up to date on his vaccinations should take priority. Most veterinarians recommend rabies every three years. Most dogs should see a vet once a year for an annual exam. You aren't going to get rabies because your dog possibly ate that bird's head. That doesn't mean I think you should continue to neglect your dog's needed vaccines. Look up the recommendations by the Veterinary governing body in your country.

Your puppy is most likely fine. You can read about rabies symptoms online on sites like this.
Rabies in Dogs: Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment & Vaccination

I really wouldn't worry to much about rabies at this point. Like the others said, killing prey animas is normal, not an indication of rabies.
Get your pup to the vet to finish up puppy vaccinations and to get a rabies vaccination as well.

Ditto Grabby.
Only way to really know for sure is to kill the animal and send brain tissue off to a lab for diagnosis. So what most people do is a 10 day quarintine. At the end of the 10 days either the animal is alive an well (no rabies) or has died or is very ill (has rabies).

Has your puppy been bitten or in a fight with a possibly rabid animal? Rabies is passed through saliva so for your pup to have contracted rabies would need to have been bitten by another animal with rabies...

Even good gentle dogs kill small animals like birds, mice, squirrels sometimes. I was rather shocked to see Jaya kill a bird a few weeks back. She was trotting along the fence line, in a playful mood and flushed a pigeon...it came up right in front of her and she just snapped at it, and crushed it...the bird was dead before it really knew what was happening, I think.

I've seen birds around Jaya before, and she's never chased them or snapped at them, and in that instance, she wasn't even looking like she did it viciously - it looked more like an automatic response...like we do when we slap a mosquito. I think the bird scared her when it came up out of the tall grass like that, almost under her nose.

But, with a younger dog, you might have a problem if a puppy-ish dog thinks that killing birds is play and fun, and if you see that kind of behavior, you might try taking steps to distract him from that kind of activity.

As for the rabies...as some said, the chances are slim. I would be more concerned about the dog getting parasites from the bird...worms, mites, lice...something like that.

Stormy.
