So, it looks like we might have a cat...
She's been hanging out under our carport and shed for going on two weeks. She's a bit heavy in the middle so I kinda wonder if she's expecting.
She is in good shape and is also very friendly. We assumed she belonged to someone. However, we asked people in the neighborhood and also put found cat fliers on doors. No one recognized her or contacted us to say she belonged to them. I had her scanned for a microchip (of course she doesn't have one), gave the local SPCA her description, and my contact info in case someone called in. We also put up a found cat ad on craigslist and another similar site.
I'll also be taking her in to the vet for a nice checkup after the New Year. Our vet is on vacation and honestly since she seems to be in good shape I don't think there's a real need to try and get an appointment with another vet or go to the e-vet. That is of course an option if something should happen, but doesn't seem to be necessary at this point.
She's been crying at our door and I just couldn't handle listening to her meowing, not in this weather (expecting 6-12 inches of snow). So now she's safe and warm inside (curled up and sleeping on a small dog bed).
So I guess I need a crash course in cat ownership! Growing up our dogs and cats spent their days outside (my mom was a stay at home mom and spent a great deal of time outside). The dogs would come inside for the night and the cats were put in our garage (my dad is allergic) to keep them safe.
I'm sure I can handle the intro with the dogs and will go out and buy some basic supplies tomorrow once the storm has passed.
Assuming she stays, what kind of litter and litter box do you all prefer with your cats?
For now I'm keeping her in our downstairs bathroom. I pulled out an empty cardboard box, lined it with a plastic garbage bag and put in some of my bunny's litter. I'm hoping she'll just sort of know how to use a litter box. Growing up our cats just seemed to naturally know what their box was for. Otherwise, I would guess that litter training is similar to house training a dog?
And I suppose I should also ask for food recommendations. Tonight she's just going to get a bit of leftover turkey and some broth.
I can get decent variety of dry and wet foods (TOTW, Fromm, Merrick, Nature's Variety, Nutrisca, etc.) however Orijen and Blue Buffalo are actually a bit harder to come by here.
And of course feel free to offer any additional tips you want!
