Limping puppy

Hi all. We have a 7 month old boy named Ruger who is a mixed breed. He weighs 50 pounds and is very active. We get him out for 1.5 to 2 hours per day. We adopted him from the SPCA so all we know is his mother is a pitbull and we suspect the father is lab and possibly border collie. Anyway, 8 days ago I went to pull Ruger in for a cuddle and he just fell to the ground and starting yiking. He has been limping since. We took him to the vet, had him x rayed, checked his little knee out, the vet suggested leash walks only and bring him back in 2-3 weeks. Has anybody experienced anything like this? If so, how long did recovery take. He can put weight on it but if he's standing still he sometimes stands like a tripod

Welcome To Dog Forum! And, I haven't ever experienced this. But, Ace did one time run into a wall while sliding on the wood floor, and he limped for like 2 minutes. But, I don't know what to tell you. Just make sure not to over exercise him.

If there's no bones broken, phew. That's a nightmare to deal with in puppies. I'm thinking that he might have pulled a muscle or some other soft tissue and that's probably what your vet is suspecting too. Just make sure (as much as that's possible with a puppy, haha) to overdo it. If you need to exercise him and poop him out, sticked to leashed exploring and maybe some basic training. Mental exercise can be as tiring for dogs as anything physical!

Ya the little guy gets pretty excited and will start to run, it's hard to keep him still. He will let me palpate his entire leg and do anything I want to it without it bothering him. There is no swelling or sore spots. Very odd. I might be over reacting but I would hope to see a little more progress. I guess I'm just worried about damage to his cruciate ligament. Poor pooch is on house arrest! Thanks for your replies!

You didn't mention if it was a front or back leg.

I had a dog that 'jammed' her neck once when she landed wrong on her front feet jumping off of a sofa. It wasn't like she was a little tiny dog either which would have made the drop...more of a drop. She weighed about 25 pounds and was in good physical condition, she just jumped off the sofa and her front feet hit the floor and she started yipping...she somehow wasn't ready or something for the impact.

I thought maybe she just pulled a muscle, so I let her be for a day, but she was still limping the next day so I took her into the vet, who couldn't find anything wrong with the leg...but in moving her neck around...the vet found 'resistance' to that. He thought the pain was more in her neck than in her leg. That she somehow 'stiff legged' her landing and it caused a pinched nerve in her neck.

So, for some days I would get my dog to relax, and I would put a warm-to-the-touch rice pack on her neck, then take it off and massage her neck. A few days later she quit limping.

But, for the rest of her life, every once in a while her neck out 'go out' and she would yip in pain and hold her head at a lower angle and limp a little.

Now days they have doggy chiropractors in a lot of cities...back then I doubt anyone ever heard of one. :p But if I had a dog that happened to again, I would check something like that out if the problem persists and the vet ok's a session.

Not related so much to the yipping, but my puppy limped for about a week and a half, even more pronounced when he was tired. I took him to the vet, who couldn't find anything, but suggested that since he was a bigger dog and was doing a fair bit of growing, it may have just been similar to growing pains, with all the growth plates shifting and his legs getting longer.

Yours sounds a little more tender though. If he's ok with you touching his legs, have you had a look at his feet? My puppy has big, hairy feet and I have to regularly check for grass seeds etc getting in between his pads, because they can cause knots right under his feet. And once or twice he's had tiny rocks get stuck for a bit before I've noticed him walking funny.

Ya it's definately nothing in his feet, we've checked him out and the vet has had a look as well. He is mouthing and licking his knee now. It looks like he is walking ok sometimes but he stands with very little weight on it still. He had a wipe out today and went into complete tripod mode :(. The vet said come back in two to three weeks, I don't know if I can wait that long. Has anyone tried any doggy braces?

It may just be a tender muscle.
When we brought our eight month old pup home from the shelter, our older cat took to pouncing on him and he tweaked his shoulder. The vet gave him a dose of aspirin and with in a week he was all better.

I would just give it time, and if you are really concerned/want another opinion, taking him to a different vet may be a viable idea. Our vet checked all his legs and when she tried to stretch his shoulder, that's when we found the source of his pain.

Well it's been a month and little Ruger is doing better. We've had him back to the vet and his knee still seems to be stable. He has been running around and swimming and you can't notice the limp but he puts slightly less pressure on it still. We will give him leash walks for at least two more weeks. He has started running like a bunny in the yard now, I wonder if he's compensating? He sits perfect however. Poor little fella
