How Much Does YOUR Dog Shed?

I have a healthy 14-yr-old yellow lab, Ember, who sheds A LOT. I know that labs are supposed to be shedders, but Ember has always been one to shed profusely--more so than the typical lab, I'd say. Perhaps it's because she's a primarily indoor Southern Californian dog (she's living with my parents while I'm abroad in Europe), so the weather's never really cold enough for her to keep a thick coat. However, I've noticed that she has always had a really soft coat--it has almost remained unchanged since puppyhood. I love the fact that it's so soft to touch, but I think that's probably why she sheds so much! I've felt the coats on other labs, and they're usually a bit harsh to the touch. Ember's coat is slightly harsher along her spine, but her topcoat is generally very soft.

When friends come over to visit, they're always covered head-to-toe in fur by the time they leave. It has become a tradition to swipe people down with a sticky fur roller before they leave the house. I had a bichon frise, too, who obviously didn't shed. I loved that I could carry her around while wearing a black sweater and not have to worry about it turning into a white sweater.

Anyway, when I move back to California, I plan on getting another dog to keep Ember company during her final years (I hope she has a few years left in her). I have my heart set out on getting a Mioritic Shepherd (my husband's idea--he really wants this breed from his country!). Just wondering how much other people's dogs shed in general...if it's common to be covered in fur after playing with your dog. I had a rottie, and he never shed that much...so our lab has really blown us away with her ability to practically create another dog out of her fur after we brush her with a Zoom Groom!

Any other owners of extreme shedders out there so I don't feel like the only one? If so, what breeds are they?

Gizmo is a Shiba Inu...and he is double coated which means he blows his coat twice a year and leaves HUGE piles of hair everywhere. I have a Furminator, but he hates being brushed .

Off shedding season, he still sheds a lot. I used to have two Shibas...that was a hair fiasco, I tell you.

Gracie appears to be single coated (at least at 5 months old, so that could change, I guess). She leaves a few black hairs here and there, but nothing compared to the Hair Hurricane known as Gizmo.

Wally doesn't shed much at all. Sometimes I'll see some stray hairs or even a few clumps, but most of the time, it's very, very little hair left behind.

Laik is basically pap "naked", so, NO problems from her, but, Leif has had a shed once so far since I've had him, &, for a couple of weeks, literally everything dark that any of us wore was covered in fine white hairs. So far though, so good! Nothing to complain about really.

I envy those of you who have dogs who barely shed...I wsh I had a picture of the hair I got out of Gizmo the last time I furminated him (he tolerated about 15 minutes of brushing...a record!)

He gives my Dyson vacuum a run for its money!

Is this a good enough answer? :D

I'm still figuring that out. Mine seems to be shedding more lately, but it may just be from the hot weather or she may be losing her puppy coat (she's just over 5 months old). Plus, I have one cat that sheds a little, so I'm not always sure whose hair is whose without closer inspection. =P

The lint roller is definitely one of my closest friends.

I have a key chain lint roller for crying out loud! I go to Cosmetology school and I have to wear solid black or solid white. Great idea, I two largely black dogs and one completely black and one chocolate. There is no safe color to wear.

I know there are some people who do not like the Furminator and say it can damage the coat (which it can if you use it too much--I think there is even a warning on the package or something), but I only use it for about 15 minutes at a time and it really pulls loose undercoat hair out of Gizmo. I am sure there are other brushes out there that will do it, too, but I like this one.

Grady has two shedding seasons (for his undercoat). It's unbelievably thick and I have to tend to to very often, year round, or it will get out of control. I tried The Furminator, his top coat is long, and it very simply doesn't do as good a job as a double row shedding rake (which is much cheaper).

My 12 year old Beagle sheds a lot! I think that most dogs that do not need to get their hair cut all the time shed. Hounds and other dogs with hair that doesn't grow longer shed all the time. The best solution for this is to try to brush his coat every day, or at least a few times a week. You'll have to clean that spot, but your dog won't shed as much all over the house.

Yeah I have a lab too and she sheds like crazy! I have to mostly hand strip her though and it's a lot easier. getting her legs done takes a long time but they look so good. Definitly a downfall of owning a lab:)

Holly sheds constantly and voluminously. Seriously - when she walks by our coffee table wagging her tail, you can see a snow shower of fur flying off of her! It doesn't matter how much I brush her, either.

Other lab owners I know say similar things about their dogs. My only issue with it is that I own way too many black clothes to have a yellow dog that sheds so much. I need to buy more beige stuff. ha ha
