How Much Does YOUR Dog Shed?

I have a healthy 14-yr-old yellow lab, Ember, who sheds A LOT. I know that labs are supposed to be shedders, but Ember has always been one to shed profusely--more so than the typical lab, I'd say. Perhaps it's because she's a primarily indoor Southern Californian dog (she's living with my parents while I'm abroad in Europe), so the weather's never really cold enough for her to keep a thick coat. However, I've noticed that she has always had a really soft coat--it has almost remained unchanged since puppyhood. I love the fact that it's so soft to touch, but I think that's probably why she sheds so much! I've felt the coats on other labs, and they're usually a bit harsh to the touch. Ember's coat is slightly harsher along her spine, but her topcoat is generally very soft.

When friends come over to visit, they're always covered head-to-toe in fur by the time they leave. It has become a tradition to swipe people down with a sticky fur roller before they leave the house. I had a bichon frise, too, who obviously didn't shed. I loved that I could carry her around while wearing a black sweater and not have to worry about it turning into a white sweater.

Anyway, when I move back to California, I plan on getting another dog to keep Ember company during her final years (I hope she has a few years left in her). I have my heart set out on getting a Mioritic Shepherd (my husband's idea--he really wants this breed from his country!). Just wondering how much other people's dogs shed in general...if it's common to be covered in fur after playing with your dog. I had a rottie, and he never shed that much...so our lab has really blown us away with her ability to practically create another dog out of her fur after we brush her with a Zoom Groom!

Any other owners of extreme shedders out there so I don't feel like the only one? If so, what breeds are they?

i just bought a furminator today its the best, it cost me €40 pretty expensive for a brush for the dog i thought, but oh my god his hair just keeps comming, are u supposed to keep brushing until no more hair comes? i did it outside, hair everywhere, maybe instead of just letting it blow around the garden i should have used a bag:whistle: maybe i didnt brush him enough but now half hour after using the furminator cooper is relaxing on my lap and his hair is all over my nice black hoodie. i just think im gonna have to stop wearing black!

Brush a lot but don't brush until it stops coming-you run the risk of over grooming -basically brushing so much you hurt the skin underneath. Especially with a furminator be careful-it can cause abraisions when you use for too long.
I'd brush 15 minutes maximum at a time.

Oh and I bet the birds will snap up the hair for nests :)

hahaha for sure! My shepherd (my avatar) Mia, she shed like crazy! Saddly she passed away last summer/fall. I do miss her for sure though, she was a once in a life time dog! My parents got her for me when I was 2 years old and now I'm almost 16. I'm looking into getting another GSD this spring/summer.

Currently I have a Border Collie with medium/long hair and as long as I stay up on brushing him (which isn't that difficult), his shedding is light.:)

Nell sheds almost not at all. When I brush her, there's very little hair in the brush. As for Chloe and now Lucky my new boy, they shed like crazy, LOL

Charlie sheds just a very little bit and it seems to be just the small patch of white hair that is between his front legs.

I think I am the only person in the world who has a Bichon/Shih Tzu cross that sheds?? He sheds.. alot. Took him to the vet, because apparently both breeds don't shed (which is a prime reason why we chose him because I'm allergic to dogs!) and we're checking for allergies by going through a food trial but I think I want a second opinion. Something has got to be up with him... I find piles of hair in the corners of the house, and when he scratches himself, a ball of hair falls off him! I'm so worried about him.

The beginning of spring is the worst for my dogs but because I groom them every day, they shed into a brush. (the pekes anyway) That way, it doesn't end up flying all over the house.

Our pug sheds much more than the pekes do
but oh well, I love the breed and sometimes 'shed happens'..... ;)

Oh boy, what a mix!!! lol I just got another GSD, her name is Marlie! As a result, my dad went to Wal-Mart the other day and bought a new vaccume! lol She doesn't shed a whole lot right now, but when she's mature the hair will be flyin! I love both GSD's and St. Bernard. I've only known, personally, one St. Bernard and he was AWESOME! I loved him to pieces! I'm sure you do love him, the hair is totally worth it!:D

My dog Toby,(Wheaten Terrier) doesn't shed so much as drop balls of hair, everywhere, although he is quite a hairy dog.His hair is not thinning at all,but when you look arond the floor you see tumbleweeds of hair. It's funny. My other inside dog Lizzy shed hair, though it drops in single peices, not clumps.:) You can run your hand down Lizzys' back and you look at your hand and it's covered with hair.Note:This happens a lot in Summer and strangely Winter sometimes too!:)

No hair over here. I was concerned about Radar being a shedder because of his long hair, but got him home from the shelter and was plesantly surprise that he's a non shedder! Makes figuring out his mix pretty hard though because everything we thought he was mixed with sheds. So there's an unknown dog in there somewhere!

Quite a bit and their not even that old yet, i brush them everyday!
Their coats are still changing, my longer coated Siberian husky doesn't loose as much as my shorter coated!

Can't wait until they blow their coat for the first time ha ha!

I bought the furminator for my GSD even before I got her home and I LOVE it. I to bought it somewhere on the web that was alot cheaper. Also started feeding a different food that is a really good food and she is hardly shedding a bit I run my hand down her back every day to see if she needs the furminator and I was surprized at the difference this made wish I had changed sooner. For some reason I can only blame on old age I can't rember the name of the food. It has Vension and Bison in and comes from Central Tractor. Wild something?

Same thing here. I couldn't find one if I tried. Not all long haired dogs are the same though.. My girls are lhasa and lhasa/bichon, and don't seem to shed at all, yet every once and a while we get a lhasa/shih tzu/long-haired-whatever in at work (the humane society) that sheds like crazy!
