Just found little Siam the barn kittens' lifeless body in my yard. My dogs killed him. Probably played the poor little angel to death. I feel like I failed him.:( I'm crying my eyes out right now. All I can say is Im sorry Si Si. I will miss youd friendly little face. Lord help me to not fail the reamaining three kittens. I will do everything in my power from now on to keep them out of my yard.

I'm sorry to hear about your barn kitty.

I don't know if this will help you at all, but I the kitty probably never felt pain. The dogs probably attacked it pretty fast - unfortunately, I have seen a couple of dog on cat attacks before in my life, and it was over in mere seconds.

I also know this...massive trauma, such as bites, gun shot wounds, broken limbs, and muscle and tendon tears (which I know first hand about) it takes at least 10 minutes before any pain starts to seep through - one can feel something isn't right, but it's not pain.

This natures way of allowing an injured creature a chance to move and get away from things sometimes. I have read that people who are shot say it's like getting hit with a big pillow...they feel the blow but not pain. I have had friends break legs or arms and they say the same thing...there's a weird, almost numbness to it...and it takes some minutes before any real pain starts.

I have had the muscle torn from my calf bone and my Achilles tendon split and when it happened, I felt like someone hit my leg with a warm water balloon or something on that order...I felt a blow and warmth, but it was many minutes before I felt any pain.

So, I hope you can find a way to not dwell on the possibility that your kitty suffered much.

I know this probably offers very little comfort to you, but the chances are your kitty died very very fast and long before there was a chance of any pain setting in.

Penne, my sympathies. Both on what your dog did -it sucks to think of them as predators - and especially the loss of your kitty. It helps to know you're not alone.

I'm so sorry. It's not your fault, nor is it the kittens' or dogs. Life has its ups and downs unfortunately. Try not to beat yourself up, just try to reinforce your yard to keep the other 3 kittens safe.

Timber, thank you. Borslap, Mittens and Livingstone are now seven months old. The boys have grown into handsome young cats and Mittens is her mothers clone. The next generation were born early in Jan, six little kittens. Two died one cold raint night probably exposure, the new SiSi we managed to save, he was so cold when his mother brought him home I had serious doubts about his future. But today except for the mysterious loss of the tip of his tail is a lively little boy of 12 weeks. Brother Boots unfortunenately were also killed by the dogs and only day before yesterday we saved their sister, the only surviving girl literally out of the dogs jaws, but thankfully she's fine. There are again three kittens left, SiSi, the Siamese lookalike, Shadow, pitch black from nose to tail, and Patches the little calico girl.
We are continually reinforcing the yard, but they are like little monkeys. They climb human height without any effort at all. We suspect however the biggest problem is they see our house cats whom the dogs do not harm and can't understand why they cannot also come play in the yard.
