Crate Training 4 year old dog

Hello! We have a 4 year old lab mix we adopted 2 years ago. He becomes destructive around our house when he's left alone for too long. We do mental stimulation, playing fetch, filled bones per our dog trainers recommendation, and even Trazodone prescribed by our vet. We purchased a Ruffland crate (he has escaped all of the other crates we've tried to use) and we are currently in the process of crate training him. He sleeps in there at night with no problem. He has been eating his meals in the crate with no issues. Our dog trainer recommended placing a kong or filled bone in his crate so he associates it with positive things. The issue is, I don't think he's that persuaded by those things in his crate. When we've placed these items in the crate with him while we're home- he ignores them and won't touch them. I'm wondering if anybody has any advice on what else we could place in there to let him know it's a comfortable place that can be enjoyable.

It sounds like the issue isn't the crate, it sounds more like it's separation anxiety. If he sleeps in it happily at night, nothing you put in a crate is going to make it a happy place if SA is the problem. In fact, it could make it worse by signalling that he is going to be left (oh no, its the Kong, that means they are going out).

Do you think that sounds possible? If so, we can advise on helping him build confidence in being alone but it is a long, slow process.

A tired dog is a good dog. These dogs are supposed to be running through the woods chasing game. Not sitting around the house bored. If you run that dog till he’s tired, he will not behave like that. Your trainer sounds like an idiot. You’re trying to correct his bad behavior by giving him bones and treats. That’s just ensuring that the dog will keep doing whatever you wants. You have to be a strong, consistent leader you exercise a dog properly and feed him schedule to where he poops every morning while you’re getting ready for work he will sleep all day while you’re goneand wait for you. If you don’t, then you can pretty much expect the dog to do whatever he wants. I don’t believe in crate. It’s like you got a dog to lock up when he’s not convenient for you. Basically you’re the king of the castle and you have your own dungeon.
