Cat missing litter box

Hi All
My Mum is having a problem with her cat Chanter. He will pee in the litter box but consistently misses when he poops. Is this a behaviour? She's tried covered boxes and he just refuses to go in them. He's about 6 years old maybe 7. This started about 6 months ago. She's put a piece of plastic flooring under his box and that helps save her carpet, but he's still pooping outside the box.
Any suggestions? No change in the litter, or at least she did but has bought the old stuff again and is putting the new stuff on the bottom and the old brand on top.

Cats are very fussy. The new litter feels different and even if you mix it in, if he doesn't like it he won't use it. He may need to have the box cleaned after the pee. It could be because the scent of his own pee has changed. Has he been checked by a vet? Could be something physically wrong. Cats are so fussy it can been anything. Good luck

My cat had the same problem consistently until I changed to a non-clumping litter, so I can attest to cats being finicky over their litter. It might also help if she change the room the box is in, since he's gotten into the habit now of pooping outside of the box in that room - or at least move where the box is at in the room. Along with switching to a non-clumping litter, this helped my cat 90% of the time.

It also wouldn't help to get the cat tested for a UTI at the vet, although it does sound more behavioral.

ditto the others... you might also try a deeper box... i used a rubbermaid storage bin for a litter box before (had 3 cats, one had LB issues) and it worked well to prevent this... lol, my cat is really long, and occasionally misses in the open boxes, but lucky for me, he uses the covered box just fine!

Is he TRYING to go in the box but his butt is hanging out, or is he just going next to the box?

They do make larger/deeper boxes these days, not the cheapest things ever, but that might help.

If he's just going next to the box a basic vet check would be a good idea, but the litter change is likely part of the cause. I HAVE to use a particular brand/type of litter or my older cat just won't use the box. God only knows what I'm going to do if they discontinue it.

Moving the litter box might not be a bad idea if she can, just make sure he knows where it is!
