Is it safe to use baby shampoo to bathe a puppy? Is the ph at the right level or would it irritate her coat and damage her fur?(6 week old Pom pup btw)

Ok, thank you. I was wondering because someone told me that dogs and humans have a similar ph or something.

hmmmm, i don't know the answer...we always used it on our small pets (mice hamsters, rats etc) without any ill effects.

Puppy shampoo is just so inexpensive, it would be better to be safe IMO.

You can always ask your groomer or vet if its safe, I guess baby shampoo would possibly be ok but definitely not grown up shampoos. Baby shampoos don't have the same chemicals right? I don't have a kid so I don't know

Better to not use human baby shampoos -- ever if they are mild for babies, the PH balance is different for any human shampoo than what's just right for dogs. I really like the TrueBlue Puppy Shampoo... found it on Amazon.

I'd better go tell all the Afghan people to get the Pantene, Tresemme, and Suave away from their dogs :p Honestly though each dog is different, different breeds have different coat types, and some dogs do well or better on human shampoos. I use Jhonson & Jhonsons oatmeal baby shampoo on my dachshund who had major skin issues going on; since using the baby shompoo on a regular basis to keep him clean he hasn't had anymore issues. I've also sucsesfully used dawn blue dish soap on all of my dogs when we had a bad flea season and nothing else was working. That being said I wouldn't recomend using any kind of shampoo, human or dog friendly, on a puppy under 8-12weeks old. Just plain water should be enough to clean a young pup; besides they just end up getting dirty a few hours later anyways so there's no point in wasting costly shampoo.

they aren't going to kill your dog depending on shampoo and use, but do you know shampoo like pantene isn't good for your hair? It strips it of its natural oils much like it will a dogs, thus more harm to the coat. Tell your afgan friends to stop shampooing and see how great the coat is then (pantene FYI coats the hair for temporary shine and smoothness)

I use a baby shampoo (Johnsons) on my girl when she's been stripped right down bare to the skin and her skin needs some help recovering from intense stripping. Her skin is always far better afterwards, soothes it right down. That said, I wouldn't use human shampoo on coat. I show her, and it would break and dehydrate the coat far too much. I use professional groomer's shampoo and conditioner that's specific to her coat and it works swell.

I have used a baby shampoo before and there were no ill effects, but we usually try to use special stuff for the dog, the cat gets baby shampoo though :D It is nice to use something that is specifically made for that purpose. A good thing to know is the coat type of your dog, because some require special attention

I, too, have used human shampoo and even dawn dish detergent during flea season when the normal strength flea shampoos weren't working. I haven't used adult human shampoos on my dogs, but I have used Johnson's baby shampoo with no ill affects to my dog's coat or skin at all. So, I think it just depends on your dog's coat type whether it will affect the coat/skin or not.

I don't know.. I wouldn't try to bathe my dog with human shampoo or baby shampoo, unless my vet recommended or said I could use it, I'd just be too scared it'd mess her skin and coat up. The only shampoo I recommend using is puppy and dog shampoo. Only puppy shampoo for your Pom, though.
