Are there other vegans who are averse to pets and interacting with animals in any way?

Nearly every vegan I've seen is very pet-loving. As someone who has never had a good experience with pets (two dogs chased me when I was a child and scarred me for life, one dog bit me a year ago, not a fan of them dirtying everything, ...), I'll forever be scared around animals. I still respect their right to live and I'll never consume an animal or a animal product knowingly in my life, but are there other vegans who are similar?
(And before you tell me, "are there others" is simply a shorter form of asking "is there a non-negligible population of" without sounding like a weirdo.)

Hi. Welcome to the forum. :)

There's a lot of broad generalisations in your post.

First of all, not all pets are dogs, and from the examples you give, it seems you have a problem with dogs, as opposed to animals in general.

Secondly, you assume all vegans are animal lovers who have decided not to eat or consume animal products because of the ethics. This is not the case. People may go vegan because of environmental or health reasons, or maybe just not like the taste of meat.

Thirdly, you assume you'll always be afraid of "animals", when this is another thing that's not necessarily true. I used to be scared of dogs. Never, in my wildest dreams would I ever have imagined having one of my own. 3 dogs later, there's one sharing my dressing gown, another on my bed, I love watching Crufts, I have books on dog behaviour and am looking up more, I read dog training blogs and help to moderate two dog/pet related forums. ;)

So, whilst this thread is better off on a vegan forum, yes, there are vegans out there who will be afraid of animals and/or choose to be vegan for other reasons than those related to animal welfare, and you don't have to resign yourself to a life of fear. :)

Im not entirely sure why youre asking this here? Personally I cannot imagine being without a dog..

I do think that being vegan and not liking dogs/pets are not really related.
As has been mentioned people become vegan for all sorts of reasons , people dislike cats /dogs /birds for all sorts of reasons inevitably sometimes a vegan and a pet aversive person will be one and the same..

However going through life with a fear of something you may encounter on a daily basis is not a good thing , maybe you should consider some treatment counselling or CBT therapy to help you combat this fear . Not so that you would get a pet but just to give you peace in your life,

I wish you luck.

As previously mentioned it for sure exist non- animal lovers who choose the vegan lifestyle, for other reasons than to benefit the animals. And some simply don’t agree with the consumptions of animals even though they don’t personally have a particular interest or love for them.

What I on the other hand find more interesting is the paradox between not exploiting animals, to use them for your own interest, and the interest to live and surround yourself with them. Some vegans will claim that it is cruel to keep pets and therefore they averse pet keeping. Not because they lack love or interest for pets but simply because they find it cruel to the animal.

Even though I’m definitely not against keeping pets, I can somewhat agree with this approach. I might not fit the category since I’m not vegan, but there’s still a somewhat correlating situation. Personally I love animals, especially dogs, however I don’t agree with keeping them if you can’t offer the right lifestyle. I’m sure many would agree with me, but there’s also far too many “animal-lovers” that only keep animals for their own interest and doesn’t care for the animals well being. So therefore I averse keeping pets and dogs to an extent, even though I love dogs.

However I’m not sure if this is relevant to your question, but it’s another aspect to vegans aversion to pets. Not because their personal lack of interest, but because of care for the animal.

I'm vegan. Started using meat (hot dogs and chicken/turkey breast chunks mainly) as treats because buying dog training treats was costing me a small fortune. In fact, I was paying more per month keeping them in treats than in food.:oops:

I've always said that I wouldn't impose my beliefs/lifestyle on anyone else - and certainly not on my dogs, so whilst there is something of a conflict of interests and while it does jar me to think of the animals that died to feed/reward my dogs, that's what being a responsible dog owner does, IMHO.
