Oh the joy of living near a neighbor who has 3 adult dogs (4,5 and 8 years old) who has decided to bring home to 9 week old Labrador puppies.

The neighbor is frustrated and worried because the pups aren't getting along well with the 8 year old (*gee, didn't see that coming) and the 4 and 5 year old play to rough (*hmm...didn't see that coming either).

*Notes sarcasm

At any rate, when asked for my professional advice, I basically told them to keep the young pups and the older dogs separated unless they were supervised. "I don't have time for that." the neighbor responded. I had to bite my tongue to refrain from saying "Then you shouldn't have bought 2 more puppies, huh?"

I tell ya - these people think they can just throw the pups in the backyard (which has a small grass area due to a gated pool) with the adult dogs who have been there for years and expect everything to be hunky dory.

I also suggested basic puppy and obedience training - but of course, they couldn't afford that either.

What advice would you have given these people? I am opened to suggestions and insight, because I just know they'll come up to me and complain again. Maybe I can have something more insightful then supervising their puppies *facepalm*

I would explain that its dangerous for the young pups to be with the adults without supervision b/c the pups still need to learn rules and dont know what the adults will tolerate. Then roll your eyes tell him he is a horrible human being and should never purchase another pet. LOL jk on the last part.

Do you have any laws in your area that could go against what he is doing? For instance if dogs are fighting and the owner is not caring for the situation properly I think every state has laws against that

Depending on the city, Five dogs could be over the city limit. You may want to use that angle to your advantage ;) Maybe convince them that the puppies need to live inside incase animal control rolls by.

Thats all I got tho, at least they are coming to you for advice, thats a step in the right direction at least.

it is good they come to you for advice, but sad that because the right advice isn't what they want to hear they ignore it. Unfortunately all you can do is continue to reinforce the correct path they should be following and hope they realize they don't have a choice if they want it to work out.

Crio - In my county, you're not allowed to have more than three pets unless you have a kennel license, which I doubt they have.

Papi - Asking is a step in the right direction if one is willing to take action, which I don't think they'll do.

Wow...sounds like they have a backyard of mayhem. Do they let the dogs inside ever, or, are they all just stuck outside 24/7 together?
Sounds like you already gave them some good advice as it is. Maybe suggest them sectioning off a portion of the yard just for the puppers?
