We have had our puppy for 3 weeks now, I am not new to dogs by any means but I am new to puppies.
I was just curious as to when we should expect him to bark. He whines and he has whimpered, kinda howled at one point. He hasn't barked. is that weird?
He chases our cat a little, he seems to be a totally normal healthy puppy, so I assume maybe they find their voices as they age?
I didn't ask the vet about it, he goes for final shots in a couple weeks I could then I suppose.

Any puppy expert wanna tell me it's totally normal?

I'm not a puppy expert, but I know that some breeds are quieter than others. What breed is your puppy? Also, some dogs are just quiet by nature. My previous dog, a husky lab mix, almost never barked. There were about 3 or 4 occasions during the five years I had her that she barked.

My current dog, however, barked very soon after we got him at 9 wks.

So I don't think there is anything at all abnormal about your puppy not barking.

Chances are he'll figure it out. Ask me how I know ;)

The first time my parents' Chihuahua barked was trying to initiate play with a spider on the pantry floor after we had him for a fair amount of time. He hasn't stopped since...

Yes...some will find their voice. Pax was a VERY quite puppy. I though I got off lucky. Other then an occasional racoon in the back yard...not a peep.

Now at 10.5 months he is starting to bark a LOT more at random people and things and I am having to work with quite a bit to keep it under control.

Some dogs just don't bark that much. Unless we were hunting, my dachshund never barked, not even as a puppy ( a lot of other sounds though). Great dog; social, ultra-confident, good with people and strange dogs (not so good with other animals - unless good means killing them) - but no barking. I wouldn't worry about it.

Thx everyone. He is a bc/gsd/heeler cross. Our pure bred heeler didn't bark unless the dot bell rang ( you could walk in, she wouldn't say a peep but not ting the bell) . I haven't owned the other two breeds though.

Mo is 13 now and rarely, if ever barks. I am not exaggerating, but I have heard him bark maybe 20 times in his life. It's always one "wuff" too, never a string of barks either. The first time he barked he was 2-3 years old.

It is a bit odd, as other dogs in his line (Labs) are pretty vocal, he just never picked it up. He does communicate very effectively through glances, whines, moans, and groans so it's never been an issue. Heck, it's actually a very nice thing when it comes to renting apartments. People are surprised I even have a dog because he is so quiet.
