The name Scotty derived from Nova Scotia (New Scotland) could also work with that regional naming stuff -also works if you're a Star Trek fan

Hal-i-fax and Arg-y-le have the same amount of syllables...so I don't see how that's a determining factor between the two choices. I also don't think 3 syllables is overly long for a dog's name.
