You didn't mention whether your prospective would be male or female, but Halifax shortens nicely to a call name for either--Hal (male) or Hallie (female).
There's not much you can do with Argyle in that regard--and there is the issue that it does call up sweaters and socks. Though if the puppy stole and chewed up socks, I guess it would be accurate, but I doubt you would want to encourage that as a hobby.
