Hi. I have a very similar issue. Mine is a rescue dog also. We got him at two years old and were his third home. He was an absolute mess when we got him, afraid of everything and everybody. He is a pug/terrier cross, his body is medium dog size (he weighs 13 kg), but he has short legs. We have had him three years and he is now comfortable with people and dogs and is well trained and behaved. Over the past year he has become increasingly aggressive towards larger breed young dogs and puppies. Nothing (no particular incident) has happened to cause this, although he, as with many other adult dogs, doesn’t like them jumping on and around him. Initially he just growled and walked away, which is fair enough. Then it changed to growling constantly and chasing them. Now he growls and pushes them down on the groun and holds their necks. It’s frightening to watch and obviously terrifying for the other dog’s owners. This happens when he is off lead at the dog beach or dog park, or even when we are at home or visiting friends with dogs. We can’t anticipate it as he is fine with other dogs and small puppies. He just suddenly starts attacking. We grab him and put him on the lead and say “stop, no”, he is trained to stop when we say this. It doesn’t work when he is attacking- we have to grab him physically and put him on the lead. He loves to run and play, he is very muscular and needs exercise.
