Getting a new puppy in November(9 weeks old) and not sure what to use to prevent fleas and ticks and heartworm and other parasites. My cats are on revolution which I love because it does EVERYTHING but the dog version doesn't deworm.. K9 advantix 2 seams really good for fleas ticks etc but I would still need a dewormer. I'm phobic of insects and parasites so I want to cover all bases with preventative medication. What do you use/recommend?

I personally use Heartguard and Frontline Plus. I think K9 Advantix is probably good too, I've just always used Frontline and have never had cause to switch.

Those will cover most of your bases. Your vet will probably worm your puppy when you bring her for her first checkup, but beyond that regular worming (aside from that that Heartguard takes care of) isn't really necessary.

I use Advantage II, It prevents heartworm, fleas, hookworm, roundworm, and whipworm. It does not work on ticks but those are not a problem where I am.

On past dogs I've used Heartguard, Interceptor, Frontline, and Advantix II. The first two are heartworm preventatives, but both have stopped being effective where I am and I actually had my elderly dog turn up positive for heartworm after being on Interceptor for years. The second two prevent fleas, and Advantix also prevents ticks. Frontline is no longer effective where I live and I've found fleas on my dog three days after using it. My current vet no longer even bothers carrying Heartguard, Interceptor, or Frontline due to their ineffectiveness.

Talk to your vet, and other pet owners in your area, about which preventative is still effective where you live, I live in E. Texas and that's where I had the Interceptor fail, and I've also lived in New Orleans which is where i found the Frontline to be ineffective.

My Aussie is on Heartguard for Heartworm and Nexguard for fleas and ticks. We are still up in the air on what to use for my Border Collie, since she can't have anything with Ivermectin.

This was a combo I had looked at, I like that someone else uses it. I will ask my vet what they think but maybe that's the route ill plan for.

Scratch that. Just looked into it some more and im too scared for my cats to risk it since it can kill them .. I could separate them easy enough and it probably would be ok but i love them too much to risk it. Now I'm back to square one.. My vet wants me on interceptor and Bravecto.. I don't know what I want but they are offering me a deal to start with that combo..

We've been with the same vet for many years, so I feel very comfortable talking to my vet and following his advice. I didn't realize this combination is dangerous for cats (we only have dogs and a bird), but talk to your vet to find out what the best combination will be to keep all of your babies safe and healthy.

Absolutely double check, but I'm fairly sure that the proheart shot does not contain ivermectin. It's what my breeder and I use, it lasts 6 months, never had any adverse reactions, and never had a dog come up heartworm positive.

I use the ProHeart shot that lasts 6 months for heartworms, and NexGard for ticks. And fleas, I suppose, but I've never had a problem with fleas even without using preventative.

We use Bravecto for flea and tick on our collies, because it's safe for breeding animals and mild enough for pregnant or lactating females, but still gets rid of the fleas and ticks. For worming we use Drontal Plus and Panacur. Since collies, being herding dogs, have the same problems as border collies, it would be safe to say you could give it to him/her too.

I use Heartgard for heartworm and I was using Frontline. I didn't think Frontline worked at all. I just ordered the Soresto collar so I can let you know how it works. I like it because (1) it's not a greasy, topical and (2) it supposedly lasts 8 months.

I use livestock Ivermectin for heartworm (it's just way cheaper and more convenient for me) and a Seresto collar for fleas & ticks. I used Frontline until a few months ago, but the weird weather this summer caused a sudden uptick in fleas late in the season and Frontline got its butt kicked so I had to find something else. The Seresto collar is working completely so far so I will probably stick with it.
