We lost our wonderful dog, Reese, to Congestive heart failure last winter after about 8 months of watching him decline rapidly. He was on many pills by the end and losing him caused us much heartache and money spent. We are empty nesters and my husband is out of town with his job for weeks at a time and I am fighting depression on a daily basis. But when I bring up getting another dog he begs me not too because we just lost Reese and he doesn’t want to go through that again right now. We are also trying to get debt free. Should I continue to wait and consider my husbands feelings or should I keep pushing for another companion?

First, I am sorry for your loss.

But we can't answer your question. The grieving process is different for different people, you both have very valid reasons for your very different choices.

In the UK we have schemes where people do dog-sitting for people who are on holiday or at work, so you have anything similar and would that help? Or volunteering at a shelter, even fostering?
