Hello,

Glad I found this forum. We started noticing a month now that my 6 yr old dog Tico is walking nose first into walls and other objects like he could not see. I try to wave my hand in his face and he doesn't react until I touch his nose.

Is he going blind? Is there a cure? If anyone has had any experience with this pls pls share some details. Much appreciated.

Susan

Your asking questions, that only a Vet after examining him, could possibly answer. You need to get him to a Vet.

sounds like your pet IS blind, not going blind, though a veterinary visit should confirm that. Cause unknown (there are many) though cures are few, but require immediate attention (today!)

Would you guys know what the approximate cost is for a basic check up to see what is wrong at a vet?

The basic office visit in my location is $45 which is VERY cheap compared to some areas. The thing about vet cost is it varies from location to location, I live in the south U.S. where it tends to be cheaper, places in the North East tend to be higher. Call up vets in your area and inquire about cost.

The other thing is that the $45 is just for the initial physical exam, blood work, shots, fecal floats, x-rays, and other diagnostic test all add to the cost.

I had a blind dog for years. They can adjust and get around pretty well most of the time, but you do need to have him seen by a vet. There are conditions that cause blindness that produce no pain at all for the dog, and others that are extremely painful. With my dog, he had cataracts in one eye (not painful) and glaucoma in the other (painful). We opted to have the painful eye removed and he adjusted just find to being one-eyed. Still couldn't see out of the other one, though. He lived to be over 18.
