Its not only the harmful side effects , you cant get ride of the yeast while using it because it lowers the immune system. it also can cause iatrogenic Cushing’s disease.
Iatrogenic Cushing's Disease | eHow.com
I wanted to add some info. Lily has been on HIGH doses of steroids for almost 10 mths now. She still hasnt developed iatrogenic cushings. Yes, pred and all steroids suck, the side effects are terrible and horrific. But, without them Lily would not be here today period. There is no other drug that could keep her disorder under control. And, FYI Lily has never had a yeast infection.

Holly please point when I said the dog shouldnt be on steriods or antibiotics? Please point out when I said anything disreguarding others suggestions? I did not once say anything of the sort

Antibiotics saved my life, I have nothing against modern medicine.

And this does not get thrown out there in "every" thread on this. Perhaps it should though because the vet profession should be ashamed of itself for diagnosing "allergies" in dogs that clearly are not allergic so they can sell cortizone shots and special food. Allergies are misdiagnosed at a shameful and embarrassing rate.

I did not once say the dog shouldnt get the drugs. My suggestion overlaps the vets advice.

So please stop thinking your being attacked or questioned every single time som'one doesnt worship your response. I did not once directly speak to you on this thread..

Steriods do not cause (contribute to? Sure, but not cause) yeast infections of this type. Antibiotic use or overuse do. When all the bacteria in the body are killed indescriminatly. There is nothing to eat or overcrowd the yeast. So yes your dog didnt get yeast on steriods, theres no reason for her to.. It wouldnt make any sense

Well, 3 days on Atopica. Not seeing much improvement but that is to be expected as vet says normally 2-4 weeks. I WILL say that Zoey is a little bit better. I wouldn't say its a whole lot better but she isn't flipping her head/ears back and forth or trying to scratch as she walks. I feel so horrible looking at her as she looks bad. She doesn't have lots of hair and it kills me looking at her. I want to say that I am not sure about putting her on a probiotic as suggested. She can't be on certain meds because of the Atopica. So no steroids, but if she is doing really bad then I may give her some benadryl. Can't remember if I posted it but I may of missed it that she has been getting small hot spots. Is it significant or not?? I don't know...I've got a lot on my mind right now and it sucks!

As for the carpets. We haven't replaced them or anything and do clean them, but we have been doing that for a long time. Nothing has changed....but the product has. Maybe that could be too??

Also, not sure about her heska results. The only score that was high was the mold and I have been reading on it and it seems it infects plants and soils. Could it be in a house too? I'm sorry if I sound so clueless, I am lol. Just trying to learn.

Could indicate that from the excessive scratching she's now given herself a bacterial infection... I wouldn't say that changes the inciting cause but you may want to make sure they're not infected.

This morning Zoey woke up VERY itchy and flipping her head back and forth again. She has a nasty hotspot on one of her ears. Its been cleaned out and so have her ears. Gave her some benadryl and now she is finally relaxed and sleeping without twitching her bbody because of the "need" for her to scratch! Praying she will soon get some relief from the atopica. On a small amount of money, I pray I have enough for the dermatologist appointment :'( Everyone in my family keeps telling me to put her to sleep because she seems miserable. I can't stand it anymore!

Can you buy pet insurance???? ASPCA has a good policy...for a dollar a day it may save you thousands...like it might not cover the allergy (there are stipulations, wait periods, etc.) but it probably would cover secondary infections...Please check it out.
We spent 6 months trying to find a dog food for our allergic dog...also...I can't remember if you checked for sarcoptic mange....refer back to Holly's input. Did you bathe her with medicated shampoo???

She is getting bathed in Selsun Blue shampoo which apparently clears up any yeast on her skin. I've actually been starting to look into insurance for her! :) Ill look into that more. Well, 9 days on Atopica and hair is starting to grow back!!!! On her back legs/sides!!! I can't say that her itching has gotten a lot better but she has mostly been scratching on her stomach with her back legs and on her chest. Both areas are protected by the shirts I have her wear. I had remembered, I ran out of Zoeys food so I gave her a cup of Solid Gold Barking and The Moon and that was when I had posted last. Maybe the next day....not positive it was what made her horrible but a possibility????? She has her Z/D food now. Now that Zoey is scratching towards the front of her which is protected, I have noticed little pricklys of hairs growing on her legs! She had smoothness as she used to scratch there and chew always, I was thinking she had done too much damage and would never have hair again, but it seems to be coming now!! So happy about that!! Given a few more days I am hopeing her itching will get better. I pet her ALWAYS when she is awake which keeps her from scratching herself. Seems to help her!

Solid Gold is not a small comapny :) I would recommend it if you can afford it!

I do want to say that if you have NOT tried grain free food with this dog...then you should start it NOW! The whole time I read this thread I asked myself "has this dog ever been on grain free?"

Good luck....
Agree, Bentley is on natural balance LID lamb meal and brown rice, because he gets the runs from rich foods, I would love to get him back on solid gold just a wee bit. the price is actually very affordable imo. the natural balance costs us more. I want to try to ween him onto it after his 1st birthday.

I agree about looking into pet insurance. It saved my dogs life and helped me to take her to specialists. But it is true that you need to find out what it covers. Most will not cover problems associated with certain breeds. My Shih Tzu had eyelashes that were inverted and had to have surgery to correct. Because this is common in Shih Tzus the surgery was not covered but the medicine and follow up appts. were. So please read carefully. I have VPI Insurance and never regretted it. The younger the dog the cheaper it is. Good luck.
