My dog is also on a grain-free kibble, but everyone once in a while I give him something like a turkey neck, or chicken thighs/drumsticks. We had someone comment the other day about how clean and white his teeth are, and it is definitely from crunching on bones.

He doesn't have any issues from that, so I think it can be done, Buster might just need some time to adjust.
