Help! My 4 month old Yorkie (Sophie) is food and toy aggressive.

Some days it is worse...today is one. To stop the aggression today I picked her up and said No! but she growled at me too. I think she may have just been caught up in the moment, cause this was the first time to do that. However she did it twice today. I must not be handleing this right.

She also doesn't like my 18 month old female. They both have been snippy and growling at each other. I have seen them play together sometimes everyday. But when Sophie get toy possessive she will guard her toys in her crate and dare my older one to even try!

They are just only a few week new to each other, if that matters.

How can I stop this behavior?

Thanks

Well, let me start with the food aggression. The easiest way to stop that is to feed them in separate bowls and separate the dogs while they eat. Don't free feed meaning don't leave out food at all times. Feed them twice a day and feed them away from eachother. When they are done, the bowls are put away out of reach. Also, before you feed them make them sit, place the bowl down and make them wait for your command to eat.

Now for the toys. Me, I'd take the toys away for now. Im sure that won't be the popular answer and that's ok too. The reason I say this is from reading your post, you have a pack dynamic going on where you have two females vying for top dog and one is almost 2 years old and the other one is still a pup. This is where you need to step in an take control. I'd start with basic obidence with all of the dogs. They must be reminded that you are top alfa dog not them.
Now, when the "Girls" get into it, have a spray bottle with water and vinigar handy and squirt them. With a firm/harsh but not yelled "out"! And spray them. Don't pick any of them up!! That will get you bit! Use your water bottle.
Time will help them alot as they adjust to the new pack dynamic since it has been only two weeks, however, you still need to set ground rules of what is allowed and what it not.
Hope this helps you out! Best of luck to you!

Why do react so Agressive about Foods ???

Food aggression is potentially dangerous behavior that occurs when your dog becomes territorial regarding its food dish or any other source of food.

First of all, if your dog if showing signs of food aggression, you should move the dog's feeding area.

Also, you should make a change in his/her diet to make less aggressive about dog foods. I recommend your dog to go for nutritional dog diet change that he/she would like.

Georgie girl gave good advice. I must disagree on one point however.

Shouting "no" or squirting your dogs is just going to make them afraid of you, afraid of the situation, or even make the behavior worse. You need to slowly counter condition this behavior and teach the dogs that good things happen when they are together in the presence of resources.

In other words. Reward good behavior, not scream at bad behavior. In the mean time you need to manage the behavior. This mean the dogs need to not be set up to fail. If they bicker or have an episode you have gone to far to fast and have failed them.

There is an AWESOME book called "MINE!" by Jean donalson. If walks you through step by step on how to fix this. I really suggest you purchase it.

If you have any questions about counter conditioning I'll be happy to help.
