Today on our walk we encountered a squirrel. Of course my dogs wanted to run after it, and of course I told them to Leave It. They were good boys and turned around to face me instead of continuing to obsess over the squirrel.

I decided they needed an extra special reward for giving up their fun chase. Instead of just feeding them a treat, I made a game of it by tossing the treat in the air so they could catch it. Each dog got five treats. My athletic dog got really into it: he rose up on his hind legs to meet each incoming treat. My other dog simply followed the treat in the air and snapped at it when he thought he could make a good catch. I think the extra challenge of catching the treat instead of just taking it from my fingers helped satisfy the same chase thrill they would have gotten from the squirrel.. When we were ready to move on neither dog glanced over at the path the departing squirrel had taken.
