We have dealt with hotspots, ear infections and a coarse coat, for a couple of years (off and on), with our Rottweiler Brutus.

We tried different foods, thinking it was grain but no luck.

My husband fed our dogs a cooked chicken breast one night and lo and behold - MASSIVE hot spot breakout within a couple of days.

So, we switched to Pulsar (the fish one) and his coat is amazing now!
With all the medication from the vet, the hotspots cleared.

But while we were there, the vet mentioned the C word - but didn't think that was the reason for all the bleeding spots.
Probably a food allergy.

But I noticed a red spot on his hind leg today, took a look and it kind of looks like a hot spot but now there's a lump behind it.

I can almost swear, it wasn't there yesterday.

It's hard and you can't move it around.

He's not limping, didn't flinch when we looked at it, he's eating/drinking fine and all his movements are best kind.

Obviously - we are going to the vet first thing in the morning! I want to clear that up - but because the vet casually mentioned it for a split second, before dismissing it, that's heavy on my mind.

In all the times he's had a hot spot, there has never been a lump or a bump.

I know it's never good to Google or jump to conclusions but now I'm terrified that it could be bone cancer. :(

I guess I would like to hear more from those that have either had a scare or had to deal with cancer.

How fast *could* a lump form?
Was it hard or soft?
Could you move it around?

Anything at all would help - even if his descriptions match cancerous lumps you've dealt with. The more I read and learn, the more I can prepare.

Dont freak out, theres a process. My dog had a weird lump grow on the back of her ear, under the skin, it felt like a frozen pee. It got bigger & my vet looked at it & put a needle in it & sent a sample of the contents to the lab to check for cancer. It was negative. All ok. A cyst where the hair follicle grew a ball of skin. I put rawleighs salve on it & it swelled up then the contents came out. It was kinda like putty. Her ear is perfect again.

Thank you so much for the encouragement. :)

I hope it's something like that with Brutus.

I'm so glad to hear your dog was ok. :)

Thanx, yeah I was frightened but really tried hard to stay positive. Non cancerous cysts are common on dogs, also their skin will often do that from a bump or scrape & subside on its own if you google cat scratches on dogs images or dog attacks fights, you can see how a tiny puncture will swell up into a big lump. Wishing you all the best. ☺
