Hello!
Hoping someone can help!
I'm looking for suggestions as to what could be wrong with my dog/anyone who has encountered the same issues.
My toy poodle has developed reoccuring styes on his eyes. They form on his outer eye lids and burst fluid and sometimes blood. The eyelid gets red, irritated and inflamed. When it first started his eyelids were also dry and crusty-like. That stopped sometime during the trial and error treatments.
He has been eating, drinking, pooping normally throughout. Overall behaving normally aside from being clearly uncomfortable and sad when this has been at its worst.
It started after we picked him up from grandma's when we went on a trip. Grandma has a large wooded backyard so it is possible that he got into something in the woods? The first indication of an issue was a scratch on his eyelid which we thought was just that, he scratched himself. Following a visit to the vet and an ointment for this, we started to see styes develop and burst with blood and fluid. They would either burst on their own or he would paw at them and cause them to burst.
The vet is telling us its a newly developed allergy and like humans, allergies can't be fixed but maintained and he should be on Apoquel daily from now on. He is 7 years old and has never had any issues with allergies before and this seems like an extreme allergic reaction to develop suddenly. & i don't love the thought of him being on medication forever for this unless necessary. This is what the vet has tried on our visits:
10/9 antibiotic injection, tri optic ointment (he cut his eyelid scratching the styes)
10/15 anti inflammation injection neo-poly-dex eye drops to be given daily
10/29 antibiotic injection, cytopoint injection (still giving eye drops daily)
11/17 cytopoint injection (tells us to stop eye drops)
11/26 antibiotic injection, nexguard (to rule out mange since he was not on any flea & tick meds after having bad reactions to topicals) and apoquel to be given daily
We have been using warm compresses on his eye periodically as well.
The vet said the next step would be to go to a dermatologist so I am going to make an appointment tomorrow.
I am not fully convinced of allergies. I'm wondering if it is an infection that just hasn't been treated with the proper type of medicine for the specific infection, as all of the medicines he has tried have reduced but not solved the issue.
Has anyone encountered anything like this/have any idea what it could be?
Thanks in advance!
