My 5 year old dog has been at the vets all day getting barium x-rays. She's had diarrhea the past few days and this morning her belly looked distended. Problem is that there is NOTHING showing up in the x-rays that could be causing her food to not digest. But the food that was in there 24 hours ago is still in there. The barium has passed through but there is still a little left in the belly. She is in good spirits and her normal cute sweet self. She is definitely not one to chew things she shouldn't She won't eat anything unless it's out of her bowl. If I have a plate of my food sitting out right next to her she won't touch it. She doesn't chew anything but bones. The vet said it could be a partial blockage with something like "fluffy stuffing". But she doesn't eat things like that (ok, well it's always possible).

Right now they are keeping her until 7:30ish and then we will take her back in the morning. They will give subcutaneous fluid to keep her hydrated. They said that sometimes the fluid will help move things, they also said that sometimes the barium helps calm things down in the gut. But the next option if, tomorrow morning nothing is moved, is exploratory surgery. Poor puppy.

Have any of you ever had a situation like this where food was still there but nothing was technically holding it in?

Hi,

Thanks for your input. When I went to pick her up last night the vet said the last 2 x-rays showed the stomach finally emptying so we went with the plan of lets see what the x-rays look like tomorrow and go from there. So we took her home with a no food rule. Then on the way back to the vet this morning in the car she was stink bombing me something fierce (real eye-watering ones too). i let her wander outside to pee and see if she'll poop (she hadn't yet since the previous morning). We are standing in line and a guy gets my attention and points to her and she's letting it all come out! Everything that was in her stomach was now coming out the rear end like a never-ending freaking slushie machine. It was embarrassing but I was so happy that it was coming out (barium color style too just for that extra classy touch) and knowing that it was what had been in her stomach). There was a small solid piece in the middle but I didn't get up close and personal to see if it was anything that it shouldn't be. Then waiting to be called I was talking to the guy who got my attention earlier and he pointed to her again as she had made some more in a more semi solid state. Like...really dog? You are housebroken everywhere but here?!?! So the x-ray showed that the stomach was clear and all that was left was some barium in her colon.

We have a couple Rx's and are on a bland diet and so far we have happily eaten a couple small bowls of white rice and boiled chicken. I mixed in some mashed pumpkin into the second bowl. We still have diarrhea but it's much much better than it was before I took her in to the vet. It has signs of solidifying. Wouldn't life just be so much easier if our furries could tell us what they are feeling instead of trying to guess? :) Thanks for your help! You are a great bunch!

Oh my poor you and dog! So glad my dogs haven't done that in public before! Well apart from severe farts and something that shouldn't of been ingested at all(used condom that's the most humiliating so far lol especially second time was in public! )

LMAO!!! That's funny and yet I can only imagine the embarrassment LOL. Gotta love our fur babies. You'd really think, out of all the tasty yummy things they eat that we give them (and they find on the floor) a condom or a stick or whatever wouldn't taste appealing at all! :)
