Hi guys!

Just wanted some opinions/feedback on an annoying habit Mia has started to develop. While it's not often, it's often enough that I'm not sure if I need to change something in our routine.

75-80% of the time, Mia (my 15 month pup) will sleep through the night and not get up to go out to potty. Other 20-25% of the time she wakes me up any time between midnight and 4am. Sometimes it's just a pee, on occasion she needs to poop (and she'll already have a poop at around 5-6pm).

She's usually sleeping by 830-9pm (and she'll have already been let out right before going to bed). I'm usually in bed by 11pm.

But there have been times when she'll wake me up at 3 or 4am to go out! it's happened 3 times in one week before...other times I can can go a whole week without her getting up.

She doesn't drink a lot of water at night and she eats her dinner at 630pm.

My friend says at some point I have to stop this and not "indulge" her otherwise she's going to think it's okay to wake up in the middle of the night to let her out. I have to make her learn how to hold it. But I figure...if she can tell me she needs to go instead of just going in the house...that can't be a bad thing can it??

I can't figure out why sometimes she doesn't need to go and sometimes she does. She gets fed the same amount at the same time every night. She doesn't drink a ton of water either unless we're playing fetch but that's usually at 530pm.

I would hate to have to crate train her again because she loves sleeping with me in bed...but is that the answer? at least until she learns to hold it? What if she's still whining to go out in the middle of the night regardless of the crate?

Can you wake HER up to go out right before you go to bed?

I mean I personally have to get up and go to the bathroom at night myself, and not being allowed to would make me a nervous wreck...

I mean, the way I see it, if I have to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, I get up and go. I like to offer my dog the same courtesy. Personally, I would just wake her up before I go to bed and take her out. If you take her out at 11, she should be good through the morning.

Since she's going to the bathroom, I wouldn't try to make her hold it. That can lead to medical issues. If she just wanted you up to play, then I wouldn't indulge that at 3 am haha. If you feel that she is going to the bathroom excessively, you can bring her to the vet to have anything medical ruled out.

I do wake her up sometimes before I go to bed (I have to coax her out to bed too-sometimes with a treat bribe! it's hilarious. She looks at me like...excuuuuse? I'm sleeping here???) and she'll go out to pee but she'll sometimes still get up at 4am to go poo.

Yah I figured if she needs to go, she needs to go. I just wasn't sure if I was "encouraging" her like my friend said but it's a hell of a lot better than a few months ago where she would leave a chocolate surprise in the living room!

Thanks guys!

Yeah I would just suffer through it. My dog needed nighttime potty breaks until he was about 2, and then he just stopped. I personally can't imagine being forced to hold it in the middle of the night so I think your friend isn't quite thinking it through. If she was waking you up to play fetch that would be one thing, but if she legitimately needs to go, I wouldn't think there is much you could do anything about humanely.
