Sleep/Crate Training

Just got a new 8 week old puppy. Unfortunately we got her after work on a Monday and did not have time to properly acclimate her to the crate. She will go in there on her own and is perfectly fine with it until we close the door. Then it's total freak out time. She wines and howls to high heaven, stomps on the floor, shakes the bars, etc... We've been ignoring it and eventually she wears herself out and sleeps for about 90 min and then starts all over again. It's awful and I'm afraid it's stressing her out (Not to mention that after 3 nights my husband and I are absolutely exhausted). The cage is in our bedroom so she can hear us sleeping and knows we are right there. She has a cozy place to sleep, a chew toy and a kong stuffed with a frozen peanut butter/banana/yogurt smoothie. I don't think it's mommy & littermates separation as much as being closed in the crate. I just don't know what else to do.

Not necessarily. When Pax was a pup he was the same. Once I put his crate up on a bench with a dim nightlight where could actually see me up on my bed he started sleeping through the night immediately...then I was able to transition his crate down to the floor after a while.
What kind of pup did you get? Congrats! Puppyhood is cute and exciting... and exhausting!

Try playing crate games with her.

Honestly, it might be something that you just have to deal with for a short time. My dog did it when she was a pup. I would set my alarm for every few hours to take her out and every time we came in, she would whine and cry and have a mini meltdown. I thought she would NEVER get used to it... and then one day, she did. The freak outs got less frequent and less intense.

I have heard of people putting an alarm clock wrapped in a blanket in the crate. The ticking soothes the pup, apparently. I've never done it so I'm not sure if it works.
