Hi, I have an senior dachshund (I don't actually know how old he is, the vet guessed 11-13) and I recently noticed this sort of growth on his back. I'm going to take him to the vet for it, but I wanted to see if anyone on here had any ideas as to what it was so I could start preparing myself financially if it is something really serious. When I first noticed it and poked at it and a little pus came out (kind of like a pimple?). It's not moveable. It's normally a little more skin colored, but since I was poking at it before the photo it turned more red.

Ignore his doggie dandruff, lol. If you see any little bits of flea dirt in the photo, it's old - I took him in after a family member had neglected him and he was infested with fleas. He has since been treated and my vet has declared him "flea-free", but some of the little flea dirt bits have just clung to him - they're impossibly hard to completely remove and he hates baths...

I was going to suggest that it might be an ingrown hair, but it appears much more rounded above the skin than I'm used to seeing for something like that. My late husky/shepherd mix had several ingrown hairs during her lifetime and they were a huge nuisance. If you're certain that pus was discharged then clearly it's some kind of infection, which makes me lean toward the ingrown hair hypothesis, but it could also be an insect bite...? When he had fleas, was there also an accompanying rash or other skin condition that suggests he was allergic to their bites?

Older dogs are more prone to abnormal skin growths in my experience, and they tend to be benign, like skin tags and the like; but if there's a discharge, the safest thing is to see the vet, like you're planning.

Please let us know what it turns out to be; you might help someone else down the road!
