I was at the dog park one day, and I saw this guy using the shock collar to train his dog, but the thing was he was using the shock collar so much, that the dog instead of training with that person the dog was cowering in a ball tail tucked tightly in, I could see the dog was terrified, so I went over to that person and told him he was hurting his dog, but instead he said nah he's fine, he's just a cowardly dog:mad: I can understand some people using shock collars to train agressive or out of control dogs, but continually shocking their dog to the point it's scared to even stand up, that's just cruel:mad:

Wow that is terrible :( Do you know what he was trying to accomplish by doing that?
Shock collars are actually a really bad idea to train aggressive dogs.
I agree it is terrible, I think he was trying to train his dog but all he achieved was making the dog cower in pain:mad:

That's sad. I always look at the dog when I judge a training method. I'm so sorry you're gentle intervention seemed ineffective. But you never know, no one wants to admit they are wrong, maybe in private, he'll have a rethink about what he's doing and where's he's going wrong. Learning how to "read your dog" is probably the most important training tool ever invented. I hope he'll start questioning -- and changing -- such harshness.

Thank you, your post is most reassuring, I really do hope he'll come to change of his harsh training ways, because he's a regular at that dog park I may be able to give you regular updates

To be frank, I am not sure of the point of threads like these. Yes, the guy is misguided, and yes, he is using the shock collar incorrectly and it is clearly having detrimental effects on the dog, and you told him just that, and he blew you off. His dog, his choice, and he has to live with the consequences of a fearful dog, which will likely not be easy.

Basically, you are preaching to the +R choir.

Mostly I think it's just a vent. Obviously most of us are already aware of things like this and support +R, but it feels good sometimes to get this stuff off your chest...

When I was looking for trainers in my current area for my future pup I ran across a "highly-acclaimed" trainer. According to their website, they do not use +R at all, and rely solely on shock collars to train dogs, claiming that all dogs love their shock collars and will do anything for their owners. I can't even...

There is no way this guy didn't know he was making his dog miserable. I hate to say it, but IMO its a type of perversion, the jerk for some reason I an unable to understand was enjoying making his poor dog miserable. Won't even go into what I would like to see happen to him, I'm sure the moderators wouldn't approve.

Is he there at the same time each day? Can you put in a complaint with the SPCA in your area?

Unfortunately he isn't always the same time as me at the dog park, sometimes I see him going away when I'm arriving at the dog park
