Shadow's back from the vet

We're back from the vets, and it's sort of good news bad news.

On the physical exam he looks as healthy as he did when I had him in 2 months ago for his leg, but has lost nearly 3 lbs. That may not seem like alot but Shadow only weighted 23 lbs to begin with.

The vet said it could be a number of things causing him to not want to eat. His teeth but we don't think it's that since he'll eat his hard joint supplement and vitamin, he could be nauseated even though he's only throwing up once a day and just started that, canine cognitive dysfunction (Alzheimer) may be causing him to not want to eat, the Rimadyl may be causing it, or he could be in organ failure.

He said that he could run the blood work to pinpoint as close as possible what is going on but that it wouldn't make a difference in how he'd be treating him, so I didn't get the bloodwork done, it's been a bad month financial wise and I just couldn't justify it. So he gave him an anti nausea shot, some anti nausea pills, some supplements to hopefully help with the Alzheimer, and told me to take him off the rimadyl. We'll see what happens and go from there.

Fun, fun, fun, time at the vet. My formally perfectly housetrained boy peed on the floor, then had diarrhea (dumb chicken in the cat food!). Not content to just assume the position and have diarrhea, he got in position then proceeded to slowly walk around while going for maximum coverage of the floor.:headshake::eek::eek::eek: He did that after I took him to the side of the building to see if he had to go before going in and we had only been there maybe 15 minutes. He never gave any indication that he had to go but just went. Oh the joy's of doggy Alzheimer!

That sucks :( I hope things get better and he starts eating normally again soon!
Aww, Rain, you and Shadow hang in there....
Fingers crossed for you that the tweaks improve his appetite.
It's a drag to get old, for both of you.

The only words I can give you, is hang in there. He probably just doesn't realize he is doing it, Little Shadow, you have my many hugs.
Thanks y'all.

Right now he's stretched out on the floor sleeping, but I know he's exhausted since he's so weak to begin with and he's had a very rough day.

I stopped at Tractor Supply on the way home and bought some good quality canned dog food (without chicken) for him, but so far he hasn't touched the kind I have out for him, but maybe he will later on today. I bought 3 different types so if he doesn't I'll try one of the other ones.

If he decides to not eat at least I'll know I tried my best for him. I know some people don't get why we fight so hard for our furbabies, especially when the furbaby is so old. Someone told me I should just save my money because he's old and doesn't have much time left anyway, but I love Shadow more then I can say and he deserves the best care that I can give him.

Don't listen to those people Rain, they just don't and won't understand.

You know you are doing the best for your boy, and that's all that counts.

Thanks Harleyboysmom.

I learned awhile back not to listen to them. I am sad for them though, they'll probably never really let themselves experience the love of, and for, a good dog.

Glad you had him at the vet and he is off the rimadyl and on other meds to help him i hope they work for sure. Poor you and shadow to go through this. Have you a follow up appointment with the vet?
Thanks Beretw and Crazy.

No follow up yet. What my vet does is calls after a couple of days to see how the dog is doing, or I can call them if Shadow is getting worse and set up an appointment.
He's still not eating. This morning he wouldn't even try anything, and I offered him 3 different canned dog foods and his pumpkin. My poor baby boy.

I guess the question now is if, and when, I should take him in to be put to sleep, or if it'd be alright to just let him pass away at home. I'll ask the vet what he thinks when they call tomorrow.
I'm sorry you're having a hard time with your boy, Rain :( Thinking of you and Shadow
So sorry to hear this Rain.

Does he seem uncomfortable? If not I might be inclined to keep him with you at home.

No, he doesn't seem uncomfortable, if he did I'd definitely be taking him back to the vet.

He's getting very weak, but right now can still get up and walk he just sways a bit and easily loses his balance. He's sleeping most of the time, when he's sleeping I can still pretend he's alright:(. He's still drinking like normal. He usually throws up once in the evening but that seems to be hunger pukes. He had bad diarrhea yesterday, but I know that was due to the cheap 9 Lives canned cat food that he ate a bit of the night before. I should have known better then to offer him that since it was such low quality and had poultry by product in it and Shadow has a chicken allergy, but I was desperate for him to eat something.
Thanks Cali.
I end up in tears everytime I think about you going through this with him.
Shadow has one heck of a mom. Hang in there.
