Does anyone have an in depth knowledge of the laws around support animals in the UK?

I have googled as much as I can of course, but the problem is that service animals are extremely new over here and as such the law regarding them is one big huge grey area :/

Imo I have experienced discrimination here when trying to find a house to rent every time I move.

I have two dogs and one is registered with my doctor as 'a necessity to my mental health'. He comes everywhere with me, is allowed to attend university with me and most store staff usually leave us be with just a confused/judgmental glance. However we have been thrown out of food establishments multiple times (despite my dog wearing his vest/badge and being extremely well behaved).

When I lived in the states I had no problems finding pet friendly accommodation but since moving to the UK I have had a terrible time with letting agents and landlords not allowing my dog(s). I explain in depth every time I speak to an agent that my dog is medically necessary and must live with me on the consultation of a doctor. I say the title 'service/support animal' and they completely turn off and say "no pets".

I totally understand landlords have a right to say whether or not to allow pets but is there any legislation in the UK for support animals?? I have called the local council, the citizens advice bureau and my doctor and none seem to offer any real suggestions as to how I can move and keep my dogs. I'm also going to get my second dog assessed but I know it will make no difference. Plenty of agents have said they wouldn't even allow a guide dog (which is a well established recognised service animal in the UK) :eek: I'm shocked!
Surely that must be discrimination???

I'm not sure how things work at all in the UK, so I may be off base here. But, you mentioned that only one of the two dogs is technically a service dog. My guess is that even if you can get an otherwise unwilling landlord to let you live there with your service dog they can easily turn you away because of the other dog. Barring him from the property wouldn't violate any of your rights as a service dog owner. Because of that it sounds like you need to be looking at pet-friendly options as opposed to trying to force a landlord into cooperating. It's probably best to try and do that if at all possible anyway since you're already off on a bad foot if they didn't want dogs there to begin with. That said, I know how tough it can be to find pet friendly options in some areas :/

Unless you rent through the council, you are relying on the good will of landlords in the UK. Some landlords don't mind but you may need a much bigger deposit, or be required to take out insurance to cover an damage. Unfortunately, all you can do is ask when you enquire about properties.

An emotional sevice dog is not recognised in the UK as an assistance dog, and so is not classified as such. Only disability assistance dogs have the same rights as guide dogs, and have to have been passed by a recognised assistance dog organisation.

@DuckDodgers said it best in my opinion. You need to look for pet friendly housing in general because regardless of the legal status of one of your dogs, the other is not included.

I don't know anything about the UK rental market but where I am looking for owner direct rentals is a much easier way to find pet friendly accommodations. They may ask for a larger deposit or may not.

did you try searching privately?
In Germany We've a lot of web portal where you can chose different characteristics you want from your new home...like pet-friendly, family-friendly or close to public transport etc.
You can also search in the ads of the daily newspapers in your region. there's sometimes a private person searching for a new renter that is not as strictly against pets.

I wouldn't put too much emphasis on the service dog thing, since one of your dogs is not a service dog, they could still reject you because of the other dog.
