Aaaah, puppies... I just need to vent more than anything.

This morning I woke up to my pup having wet herself in her crate some time during the night. She hasn't done this in a while, so I'm not too concerned. I immediately took her outside for her business, then gave her a bath before her breakfast.

Freybug loves baths, especially the part where I get her a big towel and start drying her off. She goes crazy with excitement and gets the zoomies. It's really funny. So I brought her into the living room with her towel and just let her go nuts while I cleaned up her crate mess. No problem. I've done it before. I guess this time, though, she was a little too excited and ended up taking a massive steaming DUMP behind my back! GREAT! More to clean up! Oh, and I should mention she also peed on the third cat bed I've had to toss. Seems she still hasn't figured out that grass is OUTSIDE and cat beds don't count as "grass".

I'm still feeling really rotten from a nasty cold I've been fighting since Friday, so at this point my head was pounding, I was nauseated, aching, and fed up. Without yelling, I let her know by the tone of my voice that I was disappointed in her as I was cleaning up her crap, but chances are she didn't get it. That's fine. I'm not really angry at her, just at the situation. Accidents happen...

So now I'm taking a step backwards with her house training, because clearly she's not ready for more freedom (though she was doing extremely well before this). It was a difficult, slightly chaotic morning. Until I see improvement, she's going right back to her 2-month-old puppy routine.

It happens! Aayla had a week where she seemed to regress in her potty training.

It started when she peed on her bed while we were gone at work. I had a potty pad in there but she has never used them. So I marked it up as her not knowing where to go and choose the wrong spot. I cleaned it with an enzymatic cleaner, threw the bed in the washer and turned around to find her peeing on a rug. Picked her up, took her outside and she finished peeing outside, so I praised and then cleaned up the rug inside. The next day my BF told me that she peed randomly on the hardwood in the middle of play (she tries to go for rug at least, typically she runs to the door) Then when I came home she pooped on the rug within minutes of me walking in. The next day she peed on her bed again. This was the worst she had been with accidents since we brought her home three weeks earlier at 8 weeks.

So we went back to square one. She was on a leash constantly, and at my side non-stop if she wasn't crated or in her play pen. She went out every 30-45 minutes. We did that for about 4 days before I noticed her leading me to do the back door when she wanted to go out. Then she got her freedom again. We have had a few accidents but that has been because we haven't watched the time or taken her out after high activity. If she had any more than 3 days of 'random' potty accidents (peeing with no warning) I would have taken her to the vet with worries of an UTI.

Just a reminder that even stern talking can have side effects! As hard as it is to not get mad or frustrated about it (Which I know happens!) take pup outside to finish any business (heavy reward if they do anything outside!) and place pup in their crate then just clean it up without saying anything.

Yeah, I hear ya. So hard not to, but I do my best to be cheerful. I just got home for a lunch break with her only to find her having peed yet again, so bath number 2 it was and more enzymatic cleaner for her crate. I'm drained.

The mood in my home isn't very good. My boyfriend is concerned that for the past two months of having her I just haven't been myself... he's pretty much right. I'm just going through the motions of taking care of her and I'm borderline angry much of the time. Not sure what to do other than keep plugging forward. Being sick right now doesn't help, heh.

You might want to take away any absorbent materials from her world until she becomes more reliable. Does she have bedding or a blanket or anything of the sort in her crate? If so I would remove them for a while. Also if she was doing well with holding it before and nothing has really changed in her routine I'd keep a close eye on her, if it seems she is going more frequently and can't quite hold it like she was before, you might want to get her checked out for a UTI.. She is still young so she may just be doing a bit of back sliding, which happens, but just keep it in mind if she's acting different.

Being sick with a puppy is the worst. You're already wiped out from taking care of the little fluff ball and then adding a cold on top of it really blows. I feel your pain. I took a week off shortly after getting my pup and ended up spending the first 4 days of it in bed with a nasty cold, had so many big plans for me and the pup and the poor little guy ended up getting less attention from me than normal.

Are you starting to feel more bonded to her yet? Have you managed to carve yourself out some alone time away from the little monster?

Hmm, hadn't thought of that. She has a little mattress in her crate right now. Hopefully it won't be soggy when I get home from work in the next half hour *sigh* I'll try removing it for the time being. She does have a vet appointment coming up this weekend so I'll be sure to mention her bed wetting. It's probably just a step back in her training... joy.

As for bonding, I have to be honest, not really. I still don't have much of a connection with her and it's got me worried about her overall happiness. She's a weirdo. Doesn't come out of her crate immediately unless I have a treat handy, but she's otherwise obviously attached to me. I just haven't been happy since bringing her home 2 months ago. I'm to sure when that will change, if at all. She probably sense it and it makes me feel like a callous jerk >_< I've never had any issue getting attached to other pets...

Thankfully I have been taking some time to myself daily. It's helped a lot.

Its hard to be cheerful I know! I've had to bite my cheek a few times and spend moments to myself. Ugh, I wonder what it is about new puppies and getting sick! The night I brought Aayla home, both the BF and I got food poisoning. So sleeping on the floor to keep the puppy from crying all night + feeling like death + midnight potty runs + the resident dog hating the puppy = me crying almost all night long.

I've been extra on edge too since I brought Aayla home. I've had to learn to relax and stop getting mad at everyone because of my own lack of personal time and space. Find what makes you happy, breakfasts out with the BF? Hiking? Reading? Choose something that gets you out of the house and an hour or two away from working or puppy duties. It helps! I also suggest removing any material from her crate and treat her like she is 8 weeks and never had any potty training.

Glad to hear that some alone time is helping you out!

I've yet to meet a dog that wasn't a weirdo but they are pretty simple in their emotions, based on what you've described in previous posts, she sounds like a happy little pup. If she acts happy towards you and wants to be with you then she doesn't sense anything is amiss. Sometimes the bonding takes quite a bit of time. It's a bit harder with puppies because they rely on you much more than a lot of other animals and it's hard sometimes not to second guess the fact that you are good for them.

I would guess she's not coming out of her crate right away because she's comfy in there.
